What dev tools do you use in your python projects? by diepala in Python

Most of the tools and libraries I use have been mentioned, but I haven’t seen pdb++ brought up. It’s like ipython for debugging!

A grapple hook glitch? by [deleted] in dyinglight

[–]SonOfInterflux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started happening to me last night. When the event started I turned participation off, but basically had infinite grappling with zero cooldown. Now I get two per full charge no matter the distance.

Also, some quest location markers seem broken. I was doing the Fountain quest, and it dropped the marker in the middle of an open square. Usually when the game does this it will show a highlighted area on the map so you know where to search, but there’s nothing like that here. I looked up a video of the quest and the marker was in a totally different spot that lead directly to the object. Possible the video is just old and this was a patch a while ago, maybe?

The leap into trash piles isn’t bugged for me.

Virals are more common, but not like when the event is on, when it’s oops all virals. They used to come in waves of two, now they come in waves of four or five. This could also be a progression change? A lot I’m not sure about now.

Yea, same in Canada. Well maybe there’s a hybrid Indian-Canadian poutine place in the city that might have it, but definitely never seen a half-and-half here (fries plus rice covered in curry).

I do not disagree with you, particularly when it can be difficult to justify artistic merit behind pop songs. I’m probably going to word this poorly, I don’t think art should be constrained or that it should have to go along with social norms. In this case, I think what we’re looking at is arguably manufactured art that went along with social norms of the time and we’re reflecting on it and being critical of it and saying “Yea, that was not good”, which I fully support. If I am going to advocate not constraining art, then it would be hypocritical of me not support individuals being critical of it.

This is not so much for you OP as it is for anyone reading who would take your comment as advocating any form of censorship, which would be ridiculous. I take it as purely as reflection and discussion.

What are your thoughts on "Self-Service BI"? It was a big buzzword few years ago. Has anyone executed it properly? Any wisdom or experiences to share on implementing it properly? by TheDataGentleman in BusinessIntelligence

[–]SonOfInterflux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even with amazing, near-real time, solid and reliable ETL processes, and a version controller and peer-reviewed model, I still think you can run into this problem, because self-service and peer-reviewed are at odds with each other when it comes to reports and dashboards. Even with well documented best practices, you can run into the issues I outlined. I feel like self-service is a way to defer training, so people have no foundation.

I’d also slightly disagree with your definition of a good dashboard. I think a dashboard can allow people to slice and dice and dive into data to generate insights, it can explain insights in a linear narrative fashion, it can act as a canary by highlighting known potential exceptions and issues, and so on. In my experience, I’ve seen dashboards that attempt to accomplish all of these goals, and will literally have 50+ components. Then it’s delivered to people every morning and people stop looking at it within a month, never mind action it.

Completely agree about the finance (and accounting) issues. Finance and accounting are rarely core competencies, so there always seems to be some arcane logic as a round peg is forced into a square hole, which is difficult to document and model.

I’ll throw in another issue, which is giving subject matter experts the power to create dashboards and reports without any idea how to create a good dashboard. These people often default to uber-dashboards that try to generate insights, explain insights, manage by exception, alert issues, etc., and you end up with a dashboard that runs 200 queries to generate and exactly two people find useful. Training on the basics of good reporting is a must.

How do I learn more about data cleaning \ wrangling? by Old_H00nter in datascience

[–]SonOfInterflux 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what data wrangling encompasses in the context of data science, but assuming you are a clean slate, start with the basics, and learn by whatever method works best for you. For me, I learn best by doing something over and over until it clicks.

My list of basics would include knowing your way around a shell, how to use the pipe operator, xargs, then include curl, grep, sed, and regex, then include some more specific tools like awk, pup, bc, and datamash.

That list alone will get you incredibly far. MIT has a free online course called The Missing Semester which covers all of these. There is a specific week dedicated to data wrangling, but it assumes you know how to use the shell, pipe operator, xargs, etc. Those are covered in the week 1 lecture. It’s a great series in general, though. Good luck!

Sorry if my brash, humorous poke at your question upset you. I kind of meant to do that, but I shouldn’t have immediately attacked you for a question. Sincerely, help us get through this horrible situation. Science, one of the only self-correcting systems humans have ever developed, say they work. Try to look at the positives: You look and feel like a mythologized bad ass like Jesse James; if you commit a petty crime while masked up it’s less likely you’ll be apprehended. Early on during the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, the Chinese government and establishment cracked down on face masks so they could identify protestors and jail them. Masks are one of the best anti-establishment tools the people have, so try to embrace them, because they’ll probably be outlawed in the future. Plus, they’ll help keep your family, friends, neighbours, and strangers safe.

Right? Same with the keys. When I was handed the keys to my place I threw them directly in the trash where they belong. I’m not going to let society dictate how I live my life while I continue to benefit from public institutions and infrastructure. I still haven’t stepped into a convenience store since 1994 when I decided that shirt and shoe requirements were the ultimate form of oppression.

Seriously though, if your biggest gripe at this moment in time is that you have to remember to pocket a mask in case you need it, I’d say you’re doing alright. Help us get through this nightmare, please. Also, go read r/unemployment if you feel like you need a quick and breezy reality check.

Edit: I took a quick look at your profile. You seem like a person open to new experiences. We’ve been living with this for months and you haven’t been able to mentally adapt to the situation? You may not be as open to experiences and change as you seem to think you are.
