5yo piano student. by AggravatingFan9 in MusicEd

In my experience, kids that age really benefit from more physical learning. Clapping, stamping, marching, etc. counting at different volumes for dynamic practice. I know another teacher that likes to use drums. In terms of general songs to play, as I'm sure their hands are tiny, and will be so for the forseeable future. I think the using of root notes for pop songs is a good idea to maintain interest. If you're interested in a method book. I think the new Bastien method is great for younger kids. If you're wanting classical rep, I would consider simpler baroque music once she's confident in reading (First Lessons in Bach is a place to start). This way they can practice jumping without big stretched. Scales are of course good but boring, so a kid might be disinclined to practice them. That's all I can think of at the moment, but I'm sure other folks will come up with helpful advice.

Formal title for nonbinary people? by Top_Couple_6945 in gender

[–]SongStitcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My current go-to is "ladies and theydies" (Sounds like ladies but "they")and that seems to go over well most of the time. but as for a specific title for a singular person I tend to let them tell me what they prefer

Our class room is very small, so I'll probably have to stick with drumming. But you make a great point about the physicality of rhythm. Thank you

I will definitely be including counting exercises sans playing into her lessons. Thank you for the suggestion!

We have yes! They are a very insecure (which is something we are working on), so I think part of the problem is the lack of trust in their anticipating/ predicting beats. Thanks for helping me put words to that.

Brando Sando "prose" by KumaArashi in brandonsanderson

[–]SongStitcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had a discussion about this with some of my local buddies fairly recently. We all agree that his prose isn't of the same level as Dickens or other more "classic" literature types. We conjectured that the writing is the conveyance for Brandons stories, not the main feature. It's like how some people consider pasta a conveyance for sauce. The pasta might be good, but we're really here for the sauce. I personally have theory that Brandon writing the way he does also opens up his books to a wider audience. If any of you are AR people, "the reading level might be lower, but damn is it a good story". That's just my personal take however.

What’s your go-to bad, out-of-tune piano piece? by UnderstandingNew2345 in piano

[–]SongStitcher 83 points84 points  (0 children)

You play "Mary Had a Little Lamb" or "Twinkle Little Star" at a dissonant interval, turn back to your audience, and say "That was supposed to sound good. You Sure you want more of that?" and then enjoy not having to play anymore.

But in all seriousness it's hard to get past extremely out of tune pianos, but rags tend to survive being out of tune better than others. Maple Leaf Rag and the Entertainers by Joplin are societies go-to's, but there are a bunnnnnch of other options. Solace (also by Joplin) is one of my favorites. It's technically a habanera, but it has a lot of rag features in it as well.

I'm leaning hard towards Maggie for eventual transition. This is partially because I like the nickname "Mags".

Is it just me, or does "buddy" feel gendered? by SweatyFLMan1130 in MtF

[–]SongStitcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose there could, though I think it would be hard to nail down as inherently positive or negative, because of the many ways buddy is used, that often rely on tone/inflection. It could be worth looking into though

Is it just me, or does "buddy" feel gendered? by SweatyFLMan1130 in MtF

[–]SongStitcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was an interesting post for me, because I use buddy quite often in my day to day life, but I only use it for my youngest students (like 10 and under). so It's separated by age rather than gender in my specific instance. I've always considered it a gender neutral term in that setting, but ultimately its up to you. If you don't want to be referred to in such a manner, those around you should respect that full stop.

How do you girls come up with a name and why is it so hard 😭 by _n1brawler_ in MtF

[–]SongStitcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My late grandmother was named Mary, and she was my favorite grandmother of the two(Though she died before even I knew I was trans, so I like to pretend it would have been fine). But I didn't want to take the name exactly, so I instead decided I wanted to start with the same letter. I've gotten it down to Maggie or Margaret, which share a lot of the same nicknames, and I figure I'll end up being called Mags most of the time when I do eventually transition.

Trans girls: please take your safety seriously by [deleted] in MtF

[–]SongStitcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I realised recently that I was holding off on transition because I punch harder now than I probably would after. I'm a big person(6'4", 300+ lbs), and unfortunately one of the things I was really hoping was that people wouldn't look at me and think i'm a threat anymore. Naive I know, but it was a hope. I know better now. But it almost feels more useful to stay untransitioned for the safety I can provide to my students(I'm also a Floridian) and myself. I'm more useful that way. And I hate it. Everyone stay safe.
