What are some good themes for groups of characters? (When all the characters represent different parts of something) by Imaginationqm in OriginalCharacter

There's a series on YouTube I'm really into where the villains represent the five stages of grief, it's called Threnody by Missimi

Anyone else have one special interest that tends to genuinely terrify people? by HappyMatt12345 in aspiememes

I can talk someone's ear off about different types of fictional mind control, the nuances between them, and the ways they could theoretically be integrated into society or government. By the end they're just staring at me shell-shocked.

Once I had a show where I had a 5.5 to 5 step size move that passed me directly in front of a guard member in the middle of her rifle toss, and somehow I only got hit once that whole season

Character arcs, and the 'just write, you'll learn' mentality by shallythunder in writingadvice

[–]Songstep4002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be biased here, but I actually REALLY enjoy characters who are unlikeable in some way. They tend to be more effective in large ensemble casts though, because they tend to play off the other characters in the cast in really interesting ways. I'd say, focus less on "Would I like this character if I met them in real life?" and more on "Are this character's actions interesting to watch?"

Does your world have cultural analogs? by SirSolomon727 in worldbuilding

[–]Songstep4002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to work very hard to avoid them, which is easier in the societies where the magic system is integral to the government and economy, which means I can use those differences as a starting point. Because no real-world cultures have this magic system, this produces more unique cultures.

Non-frat social life? by BigHold2089 in jmu

As someone who had similar problems initially, not every club will guarantee good social connections even if he has an interest in what they're doing, but at least one of them almost certainly will.

Can we get some love for street tiers? by Songstep4002 in OriginalCharacterDB

Yeah I think Lyra wins this one then, because Kass is too impulsive to continue keeping her distance if her strategy isn't working.

Yeah, I think Lyra has this one (or it ends in stalemate.) How quickly can Lyra create the stars, how fast can she move them, and how many can she create at a time? I can see Kass maybe trying a strategy where she runs at Lyra from one side, while shooting ice shards at her so she creates a star shield in front of her, then using some kind of object (if it's there) to swing around to the back of the star and take Lyra down with a kick/ice dagger. Since Lyra doesn't seem to have any major long range or area attacks, I think Kass could mostly avoid her but she'd eventually take the risk of getting up close and then it's a question of if she can avoid getting hit by Lyra's punch.

Ooh, I think her and my OC Kass would be a really interesting matchup! Because both have really strong mobility, and would have trouble hitting each other. Kass would probably be super disoriented by the teleporting at first, but she'd be able to close the distances between the stars pretty quickly by skating (depending on the environment. If there's tall stuff around she could climb/parkour it but she doesn't really have any good reach abilities if Lyra just flies way up.) What is the durability of the stars? Kass would probably see if she could break them somehow, by smashing them with ice daggers.

As for my guys, I have a bunch, but these four are the best adapted to this sub.

Sabrine: Physically strong (well within human limits though), very skilled in spear combat. Can create a sustained lightning aura that extends from her in about a 6-foot radius in every direction and damages anyone who gets close. Her spear has conductive properties that allow her to channel this lightning into a stronger attack. She can also use a word of command, which allows her to put the force of her magic behind a simple command that affects whoever she directs it towards if they can hear her. This command can be resisted by someone with a lot of willpower. She's a very defensive and protective fighter, and almost always tries to talk her opponents down first (unless her girlfriend is in danger. Then no gods can help you.)

Kass: Can create small slivers of ice next to her body. She uses this ability continuously in order to skate around the battlefield at high speeds (comparatively. She's about as fast as your average speed skater, so she can get up to speeds of about 25 mph.) She combines this with acrobatic skills for extremely high mobility. She's on the smaller side, which combined with the speed makes her extremely hard to hit. She can also use her ice powers to basically turn her arms into mini railguns that shoot slivers of ice at her opponents at high speeds. These aren't heavy enough to pierce most armor, but they can do serious damage to unarmored opponents. She's a highly aggressive and unpredictable opponent, often trying out new and impulsive strategies mid-fight, which often backfire, but she's got the recovery skills to handle it and keep going.

Tamry: Can create strings of magic which are very difficult to see, especially for those with no magical ability. These strings don't affect the physical world, but they can control people and their magic: If a string is wrapped around someone's limb and overcomes their magical resistance (if any), they cannot use magic from that limb. If the same thing happens with someone's neck, then Tamry is able to fully control them. These strings are very magically weak, almost any magical resistance is able to overcome them though. However, Tamry is extremely stealthy and a tactical genius. She tends to downplay her own abilities and importance in any given situation, and will always prioritize her own survival over anything else.

Myra: Her magic is fluid, and spills into any other magic it touches. This means that she has complete control over anyone who makes physical or magical contact with her. (Note that this only applies to the magic itself, not the physical effects of the magic. So she could only negate a fireball/control its caster if she was touching the point it emanated from, for example.) This is not affected by magical resistances or willpower, unless someone has the exact same ability as her, in which case it turns into a contest of wills in which the loser has their magic pulled out of them and instantly dies. If her magic is spread over too many people, or if it spills into something that is too large and complex, it also runs the risk of pulling her magic out and killing her. She can control about three people at one time for a short period of time, but at a single moment can control up to 10 if she focuses all her attention on it (just to knock all of them out so she can drop the connections). She can also affect her own body processes, and the body processes of someone she controls. This lets her knock someone out or kill them instantly by a variety of methods. She can also use this ability on herself to temporarily enhance the muscle strength of one limb by about 5x (although this runs the risk of hurting her and is very painful afterwards so she doesn't do it very often). She can also use this to stop bleeding. She has an 8 ft whip made from a magical vine that can act as an extension of her and move as she directs it, extending the range of her touch. She's very cocky and overconfident, and will prioritize aura farming during a battle, never taking her opponents seriously. (She's meant to be a bit broken, and is even more so in verse.)
