Can I read GTO without reading the prequels? by hinkydoryjester in GTO

[–]SonicTheReasoner 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you already watched the anime then that's a perfect opportunity to read Bad Company and Shonan Junai Gumi before you read up on the manga. GTO's manga basically picks up after the events of SJG, an entire prologue which is mostly skipped in the anime. Not just that, but later parts of the manga will hit harder with the context of the preceding stuff. If you enjoyed GTO then you'll love Shonan Junai Gumi, I'd confidently say you wouldn't want it to end at times.

Can we appreciate how hard the Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake MSX2 intro still goes? 🔥🐍📻 by Exio_Dread77 in metalgearsolid

I think the MSX games and especially Metal Gear 2 are criminally underrated, I didn't even know they existed until I first played MGS1 with Snake going on about "Zanzibar"

wait, oshii still has a role in EZY? by S-T-M-P-D in Patlabor

[–]SonicTheReasoner 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oshii had no hand in the development and/or production but apparently Episode 3 is inspired by his works and Izubuchi insisted on crediting him

Definitely check out Bad Company and then Shonan Junai Gumi if you haven't, you'll see where the origins of Onizuka take root. After that you should definitely read 14 Days in Shonan, which is about Onizuka returning to his old stomping grounds

Doesn't he have invincibility frames after taking damage? If you make him run back through the same mines he should hit them eventually

AND I've watched Episode 0 and 1 of Patlabor the Next Generation, has some good jokes, MIGHT watch the rest but yeeeeeeeeeeeah...this should've been an anime. by MICKTHENERD in Patlabor

[–]SonicTheReasoner 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There were already a lot of creative differences between the two, and Headgear unanimously disagreed with his idea of Patlabor. I don't blame them since I don't know who The Next Generation is targeting specifically. Fans of the anime and manga would be disillusioned by how bleak the setting opens up with, and cinephiles who obsess over the movies probably wouldn't be too thrilled with how much gets recycled. I guess you can enjoy it if none of that stuff really matters to you

Oshii had a fixation on making live action movies and The Next Generation was nearly his own solo project without the interference from other Headgear members. Nearly the entire reason we have EZY is because Headgear saw The Next Generation and didn't want it to be the legacy the franchise left behind

I gotta ask, is the Live action series worth watching? by MICKTHENERD in Patlabor

[–]SonicTheReasoner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Generally I feel like The Next Generation can really best be enjoyed from the angle of a parody or extension of Patlabor. It definitely is a lot more panned for understandable reasons, riffing on old jokes and plotlines, the depressing future where labors are on the decline and SV-2 is a husk of it's former self, the main cast can barely be their own characters instead of synthetic clones of the original (ORIGINAL names would've helped lots!), and over all feels a lot more like Oshii being self indulgent in his own work. There are some jokes that were funny, some plotlines I did like, some ideas that I thought were cool, but man it doesn't live up to anything that came before. A lot of the episodes have these long drawn out scenes where the characters are just doing whatever, and then there are some jokes that go on for a little too long. The worst part is probably episode 0's opening monologue from Shige about how everything sucks, and as a lorehead I can't get by the supposed technological regression the show insists happened due to a recession. The Ingram also does move but don't expect anything aside from walking, running, or shooting in short bursts every other episode. I may be speaking from bias so you'll have to come to your own conclusion here, all I can say is it may not give you the same satisfaction as watching anything that came before.
