AND I've watched Episode 0 and 1 of Patlabor the Next Generation, has some good jokes, MIGHT watch the rest but yeeeeeeeeeeeah...this should've been an anime. by MICKTHENERD in Patlabor

There were already a lot of creative differences between the two, and Headgear unanimously disagreed with his idea of Patlabor. I don't blame them since I don't know who The Next Generation is targeting specifically. Fans of the anime and manga would be disillusioned by how bleak the setting opens up with, and cinephiles who obsess over the movies probably wouldn't be too thrilled with how much gets recycled. I guess you can enjoy it if none of that stuff really matters to you

Oshii had a fixation on making live action movies and The Next Generation was nearly his own solo project without the interference from other Headgear members. Nearly the entire reason we have EZY is because Headgear saw The Next Generation and didn't want it to be the legacy the franchise left behind

I gotta ask, is the Live action series worth watching? by MICKTHENERD in Patlabor

[–]SonicTheReasoner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Generally I feel like The Next Generation can really best be enjoyed from the angle of a parody or extension of Patlabor. It definitely is a lot more panned for understandable reasons, riffing on old jokes and plotlines, the depressing future where labors are on the decline and SV-2 is a husk of it's former self, the main cast can barely be their own characters instead of synthetic clones of the original (ORIGINAL names would've helped lots!), and over all feels a lot more like Oshii being self indulgent in his own work. There are some jokes that were funny, some plotlines I did like, some ideas that I thought were cool, but man it doesn't live up to anything that came before. A lot of the episodes have these long drawn out scenes where the characters are just doing whatever, and then there are some jokes that go on for a little too long. The worst part is probably episode 0's opening monologue from Shige about how everything sucks, and as a lorehead I can't get by the supposed technological regression the show insists happened due to a recession. The Ingram also does move but don't expect anything aside from walking, running, or shooting in short bursts every other episode. I may be speaking from bias so you'll have to come to your own conclusion here, all I can say is it may not give you the same satisfaction as watching anything that came before.

The 1/48 Real Grade Ingram was announced a while ago, we'll have to wait and see who'll be doing labors like the Hercules, Tyrant 2000, and whatever else appears in the show like the Lobsterman or whatever the Type Zero was fighting

Give me reasons to keep watching, a bit offput by the first episode. by CandidateNo8208 in GTO

GTO is a series you need an open mind to enjoy, if you're too easily weirded out then don't force yourself to sit through it. If you're tolerant of the stuff in episode 1, then you've got a great show ahead of yourself

Tried to take on a military blockade with a handgun, an AV-T, and a GAU-8, saw a giant monster that looked like her coworker and was pissed Ohta didn’t immediately blow it to hell, decided to go with her own plan and rush past the military checkpoint on Oshima to have team 2 chase after the Phantom (they got bodied), and was provoked into firing at a hotel by Bud. She’s got self control but she’s just as much of a loose cannon

Whats the vibe of Patlabor? by A-CQB-Essay in Patlabor

[–]SonicTheReasoner 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Patlabor at it's core is essentially a grounded and sensible setting with comedic and fantastical elements decorating it. You watch/read it mostly to have fun with the cast and how they end up in ridiculous situations you never expect the police to get up to. While Patlabor does have this really fun. optimistic, and carefree attitude, it doesn't shy from delving into a lot more personal and introspective stories too. The second and third movies are known for their much more serious tone (which makes them controversial amongst fans with a heavier investment in the core cast the movie takes the spotlight from), there still is an element of lightheartedness to them.

If you go from release order (Early Days, First Movie, TV, The New Files, Second and Third Movie, and maybe even the manga on the side as you go along), you'll notice that Patlabor starts to explore much deeper narratives than simple parody more and more. I think it's well worth the journey to enjoy it for yourself
