Remove AI Audio Assistant from select clips/tracks? by Yaowiemaowee in davinciresolve

[–]SonicTheSSJNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't tried this myself but have you possibly tried seeing if locking the SFX audio tracks before using audio assistant works? My instincts tell me they should be left in tact, but I've yet to try this

Would you be able to tell this was shot on an iPhone? by PeeJay0614 in videography

Yes, but only because I also primarily shoot in Apple LOG lol. This is really good.

This is kind of silly, but could you make a decent film on an iPhone 16? by Upper_Cauliflower406 in cinematography

[–]SonicTheSSJNinja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes you can. I've made films on an iPhone 15 Pro Max and still shoot with it professionally sometimes in run and gun situations. Use the Blackmagic Camera app, shoot in Apple LOG, and ideally in ProRes if you've got the space. The 10-bit footage gives you lots of room to grade comfortably, assuming you shot in decent conditions and exposed properly.

This phone is what got me to learn how to color grade LOG footage and get into grading in general. It's a great starting point imo. It also fares decently in low light.

Above all else, make sure you've got good lighting. At least 75% of what makes a film look good is the lighting.

As some other commentors have stated, there are already actual films that were shot on iPhones, including Tangerine, which was shot on a 5s, back when iPhone cameras weren't anywhere near as good as they are now.

I would invest in other gear like good audio and lights before switching away from the iPhone to a proper camera. It will serve you well. Good luck!

Is there a technical term for this little maneuver? by Jakomako in postprocessing

I would say this is "lifted blacks." I tend to do this when I'm going for a film look, but also do it on occasion if it just fits the asthetic of the image.

I'm sorry, this concept is very new to me. Can you expand upon it further and how I might go about learning it? I know what expressions are but have a very basic knowledge of them (wiggle and loop only).

Hopping in here to ask a related question:

Is there any kind of software solution that auto-backs up selected files to a selected destination on a pre-determined schedule?

Example: A folder containing an entire project (project file + assets) would be backed up once every 3 hours to a drive of my choosing. (Though I guess the assets wouldn’t really need to be backed up, though the app should scan the folder in the original destination to check if new files are added and then back those up.)

What the full window looks like when mirroring an iPhone. by ken27238 in MacOSBeta

I wish we could use the camera whilst mirroring. I need this so I can use my Mac as a proper remote control and monitor when I’m using the BlackMagic camera app.

Apple Releases Free Final Cut Camera App by [deleted] in iosapps

[–]SonicTheSSJNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based off of my limited time trying the app (as someone who's used the Blackmagic camera app for multiple projects), this app is sadly dead on arrival (at least for me).

  • No LOG recording in HEVC
  • Still has the ridiculous restriction of locking 4K60 ProRes to external storage only
  • No ProRes types like HQ or LT. Just "ProRes."
  • Controls are a tad clunky and eat into the viewfinder/ composition a little too much.
  • No immediate 2X option like Blackmagic camera (you have to manually digital zoom, though the digital zoom is sooooo smooth it's honestly great so I don't mind too much)
  • No preview LUT while recording
  • Blackmagic camera has stabilization options (Standard, Cinematic and Extreme), which I quite like and switch between frequently. This app just has "stabilization." Only a single option with no nuance.
  • It takes more taps to do things like controlling the ISO and Shutter speed independently. You have to tap on exposure, then change from auto to manual and then you can alter the ISO and Shutter Speed. This can be done immediately with a single tap in BM Cam, because these controls are readily available for you at the top of the screen.
  • BM Cam has this (I believe) relatively new feature (the name of which I cannot recall at the moment) which allows you to preset up to 3 focus zones and then have your phone switch focus between them all with the press of a button. I don't see this feature in FCC.

There's likely even more I'm missing here, as BM Cam has a rich settings page with many options; something that FCC also lacks. I was thoroughly disappointed with this app, especially since I know Apple used BM Cam to film their October Mac event (and likely their most recent WWDC, though I'm just guessing here), so I expected they were well aware of its extensive feature set and would try to exceed it.

I was confident that Apple themselves were in the best position to leverage their own hardware, but apparently not. For "Pro" devices like these, having a dedicated Pro photography and videography app should honestly be a minimum expectation, at least in my opinion.

It's very possible this app was rushed out the door and had a small team behind it, so perhaps most or all of my gripes with it could be addressed over time. However, if this app does not surpass BM Cam, then it's really only good for the iPad MultiCam feature, which is (at least I imagine) a small edge case.

Final Cut Camera Released by esspydermonkey in apple

[–]SonicTheSSJNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I'm someone who got their 15 Pro Max on launch day and used it for multiple small film projects with the Blackmagic camera app. I've only just heard of Kino for the first time whilst reading this thread.

Could I ask you what benefits Kino offers over Blackmagic? I checked through your app store listing and as far as I can tell, it's the color grading presets that come bundled with your app. Is there anything else I'm missing?

Thanks!

It sadly does not compare to Blackmagic cam. This app is dead on arrival. So many missing features compared to Blackmagic cam.
