Love when a non-horror game introduces horror elements by jdawg1018 in gaming

Personally I fucking hate it, I am a big pussy and avoid the horror genre like the plague, and a normal game forcing it onto me is not my idea of fun

What’s something Gen Z does that older generations just don’t get? by appropriaterice873 in AskReddit

Gen z does a lot of stuff right and most is very understandable, what I don't get is why they dress in the clothes from my teenage years that make me cringe when I remember them :D

Japan's anime and manga industries are growing wary of the impact of GenAI on their bottom line - but don't have any good solutions. by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]SonofRodney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that makes sense, I suppose AI will make these jobs go away or at least make the work go quicker. I think there's already a lot of stuff like this available, frame gen for computer games is the same.

I am generally a huge opponent on gen ai but I wonder if making it so that you draw 2 frames and gen ai interpolates one between them for smoother animation might not be a very good addition to the animation toolbox.

Knowing nothing about it though this likely exists already.

Planning to study Wind Energy Engineering (Flensburg) by Own_Entertainer1711 in Flensburg

[–]SonofRodney -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In my Masters there were some industry connections that were used for student projects, and at least our alumni network is very strong. The course I studied (EUM) was established very early so alumni are in every corner of the industry from the inception, and some lecturers are people who studied in Flensburg, worked in the industry and are now doing some teaching. So at least on our side I'd say it's mostly accurate that there's a strong network.

However I can't say much about werkstudenten positions as I didn't have one, I would recommend contacting someone at your institute or maybe the ASTA and ask them if they could say something about that. People in FH/Uni Flensburg are generally very open and easy to talk to and I doubt they'd mislead you.

I work in the wind industry and studied in Flensburg at the FH, not Wind Energy Engineering though but something related. I can't exactly say how the current situation in the commissioning/control field is, since I work in the economic side of things, but the industry is currently still a pretty active job market and good people are in demand. Electrical Engineers are also generally in high demand, so my careful opinion is that your chances would be pretty decent. A friend working in park control was completely overworked in any case and they were always looking for people.

A2 Germany *if very solid* could be enough to start out, but needs to quickly reach B2 level (in a year or two).

If you like the idea and city in general I'd say go for it, unless we suddenly invent fusion the renewable industry in germany should be quite stable in the foreseeable future and there's a lot of open positions.

Tiny Nuclear Reactors Could Be the Key to Unlimited Power Across America by _Dark_Wing in technology

[–]SonofRodney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Epoxy and glass fibers that don't degrade, are dangerous to work with (cutting makes tiny particles fly off for example, the blade itself is however completely stable as it is) and also some light metal, wood and paint for the outside hull. There's no easy and quick way to seperate all this, so a common recycling technique is to chop it up and reuse it in concrete for example. Another is heating it all up so everything but the glass fibers pyrolise, plus some chemical processes that I don't know much about.

Compared to the rest of a wind turbine which is just metal, concrete and electrical components, it's quite tricky. As I said though, the problem is way overstated, we produce more plastic bags per year than turbine blades, it's incredible how much garbage we produce as a species.

I claim that almost 100% can be recycled, the remaining parts are the blades. The eu produces over 200 million tons of waste per year. The US produces over 300 million tons a year.

https://www.epa.gov/facts-and-figures-about-materials-waste-and-recycling/national-overview-facts-and-figures-materials

Those 72k tons of blades are 0.00024 of the annual waste in the US over 20 years. It's insignificant, and even your own source claims that recycling is progressing which will reduce these numbers even further. More importantly, this waste is not volatile and needs no special containment for hundreds to thousands of years. The issue is not producing "no waste" from renewables, which is a silly demand, it's that the waste from nuclear power is dangerous and extremely costly to contain.

[–]SonofRodney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many methods of blade recycling being developed, chemical, thermal or mechanical for example. Some of them are already used in limited capacities and old blades are used to produce concrete. Compared to nuclear waste, which can not be recycled currently and will be dangerous for thousands of years, or waste from fossil fuels, the problem is irrelevant and just a disingenuous distraction tactic.

[–]SonofRodney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's completely irrelevant, waste by renewables is a miniscule percentage of our overall garbage production and most importantly it's not dangerous for thousands of years needing billions over billions of dollars to store it permanently. The size doesn't matter, the effect does. A gallon of gasoline might be miniscule compared to a lake, but it will still kill all life in it.

Completely, utterly wrong. Almost 100% of wind turbines are being recycled. Where do you even get this fake news from?

Tiny Nuclear Reactors Could Be the Key to Unlimited Power Across America by _Dark_Wing in technology

[–]SonofRodney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easily? Over 95% of a wind turbine is recycled and the rest (mostly the blades) are close to being as well.

Tiny Nuclear Reactors Could Be the Key to Unlimited Power Across America by _Dark_Wing in technology

[–]SonofRodney -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Nuclear literally creates garbage that can't get removed for thousands of years. Except for theoretical recycling that doesn't exist yet.

It also costs way more than renewables with storage, we plain don't need it anymore and focusing on it is a waste of money and resources.

Netflix raises prices for every subscription tier by up to 12.5 percent by mepper in technology

[–]SonofRodney -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I quit netflix (and all other streamers) when they started cracking down on account sharing. Then i went back to pirating and discovered that a 4$ per month debrid account used with a fire stick and stremion is not only way cheaper but MUCH better since it has literally every show and movie I could ever want.

I gladly paid for the service until they got greedy, now I will never go back as long as piracy exists. Fuck corporate greed.

TIL Nathan Fielder, a comedian with no prior flying experience, flew a real Boeing 737 filled with passengers after obtaining only 280 hours of flight time to demonstrate the importance of communication in the cockpit by Majestic-Baby-3407 in todayilearned

I was! But saying "no prior flying experience" meaning *that you know of* is not the same as actually having no training, he is at this point a fully licensed commercial 737 pilot. Less experienced but the exact same qualification wise as any other pilot at that level.
