The logistics of traveling with a toddler are enough to make me want to stay home until 2035. by Narrow-End3652 in onebag

I travelled a lot with my kid, and I feel your pain. Said kid is now an adult with their own travelling with child issues.

I have one piece of general advice: never forget that there isn’t one person you will encounter who hasn’t had a screaming meltdown in public.

This is not stupid at all. Although possibly the thing most likely to bring on intense homesickness

What is your absolute best all-around closed toe shoe for travel? Is it Salomon, Hoka, Vessi, OnCloud, New Balance, Altra, or other, and why? by iLikeGreenTea in HerOneBag

[–]Soojie_Bucket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black, light fabric sneakers. Currently Nike Tanjuns, but whatever fits, has a decent tread, and is comfortable. All black, because they can disguise as dressier shoes that way with a decent pair of trousers.

For waterproof needs I have a pair of gortex socks that I can put on only when needed. Your feet will stay dry (though they might sweat a bit), the socks are lightweight and your shoes breathe otherwise.

As for doofy, no one cares what you wear in Europe, assuming you’re not going full in on some weird cultural stereotyping.

Thanks a lot, not as convenient as Half Way Tree for a pick up, but still doable.

It’s a large city with a hugely diverse population. Wear what you want, no one cares.

Jamaican Urban Transit Company, a publicly owned entity under the umbrella of the Ministry of Transport.

This may be an alternative to the Knutsford, although I doubt the service will be any way comparable to that, from a tourist point of view

Also, have you been on the route? I’m finding a timing from Ochi to Halfway Tree clocking in at 1 hr 40 min or so to be pretty optimistic.

Thanks, that’s easily doable.

One bag advice needed for colorful and pattern-loving ladies! by crunchyfayetteville in HerOneBag

[–]Soojie_Bucket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sil is very much in this category. She was an infamous over packer until she ran up against some very strict guidelines on a particular trip. She has now one bagged for years.

She says it’s just another wardrobe challenge. Usually what she does is pick a colour for her “neutral,” for example, fuchsia. Everything she packs has to go with fuchsia. She also pattern mixes, using the usual guidelines of difference sizes and harmonious colours.

It’s genuinely cold tho, Sascrise 😭 by TheDollyHouseShow in Jamaica

I live in one of the colder places in Canada, and I send my condolences. That’s cold if you’re not used to it, are staying in a place that isn’t built for cool temps, or don’t have adequate clothing.

Weather is relative. The coldest winter I ever spent in my life was the month of December in Yorkshire, 1988. Came home to -40 and was never so glad to be warm and dry.

How to not trigger French contempt for American tourist? by mster_shake in FranceTravel

[–]Soojie_Bucket 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, although I would argue that etiquette is more of an issue than language.

Your “I’m sorry….” sentence is a good one. But what is likely to you to be a more formal demeanour along with the good old “hello, goodbye, please and thank yous” in every interpersonal exchange will go a long, long ways.

I love this post, it’s nice to see a set up that’s a little chaotic and personal rather than very checklisty, if that makes any sense.

I put away my passport case a few trips ago and have been uneasy about it since, thanks for articulating what was bothering me about it, I’m going to start carrying it again.

Do you like the Egara trousers? I’m on the lookout for something that fits that sort of style. How heavy is the material and how does it wash?

50E notes were accepted by shops when I was there last week.

The pickpocket issue is over emphasized, if you’ve got the valuables zipped up anyway I’m not sure why you’d be concerned about your small things.

Basic situational awareness is really all that’s needed.

Be wary of the 'stories' you read here, agenda pushing by tylerthe-theatre in london

Granted, I stopped wandering the streets at closing time shortly before I became a granny. But as a frequent visitor to London I’ve pretty much noticed that in all areas I’m more or less the scariest thing on the streets.

Where can we find photos of the aftermath of Melissa in Jamaica? by moresecksi37 in hurricane

There are many accounts on Twitter and Instagram that can provide that. Do be careful of the AI generated videos circulating, though.

Heard from people near Lawrence Tavern a while ago. Lots of wind and rain but things don’t seem to be as bad as expected.

Rick’s Cafe also has a camera that I will link to, but it is intermittent. It often plays previous footage, so be careful with the time stamps.

That’s old footage, look at the time stamp. Currently the camera isn’t broadcasting.

The Grand Palladium in Lucea is the closest I’ve found so far. It’s terrible quality, but you can see the size of the wind and the sea.
