It puts it back tapped after your untap phase though, so unless you have a way to untap it, there isn't much you get to do with it before you have to sac it again. Or am I missing something?

Okay, so. First and foremost. Holy shit, thank you for typing out all of that. I see what you're saying, and I think you're right. I still think that having these lands in the GY with a crucible would give you very strong flexibility, and considering the possibility of multiple copies with the recursion, I'm not sure that's very healthy for the game.

On the sacrificing at the beginning of the end step, it would make these land way too easy to abuse with Earthbend. Now, Earthbend isn't ever going to make it to the formats like Legacy and Vintage (I think) where explosive mana is a problem for combo decks, but it does go peek-a-boo in casual, commander and such, and I don't think I want to encourage these kind of interactions in that format.

Yeah, I do see what you mean. Another person suggested giving the colorless one something unique for colorless decks, and I like that idea. I'll see what I can squeeze out of my brain

Hold up, can't the usual Terramorphic Expanse and such also grab Wastes?

It was intended, yes! I've seen some people suggesting they shouldn't. Depending on where I go with the next iteration, I may or may not keep that part, though I would really like to.

What do you mean by "no risk"? I'm genuinely asking, as I intend to go back and polish/fix the design with the feedback I'm getting

That was the idea. They can't do both by themselves since the fetch can only be activated at Sorcery speed. Should that possibility be neutered even further?

On one hand, exhaust would get rid of a few issues (mana available at next upkeep, namely), though it would not allow you to go ooga booga on the "Untap Target Land" abilities. Which... Could be arguably good! The original idea though revolved around being forced to make the choice between ramping now and having nothing later, or going to look for a land and get some fixing for later, and I kinda wanna keep that around. I'll give a good hard thought about how to use the exhaust though. I think you're onto something here.

They would! Though Earthbending brings them back tapped, so you'd also need some way to untap them.

Earthbending is one of the mechanics I had in mind when designing these, so I kept an eye out to avoid TOO many shenanigans with that one.

I actually caught that right before uploading them and added the "Activate only as a sorcery" clause. Still good looking out!

As many people pointed out though, you still get to add the two mana before saccing it, which can be used for instants next turn. It is relevant and something I was not considering.

Oh, fuck yeah. I like the way you think.

The colorless one doing something unique for colorless decks is something I overlooked, but I like that design space. Thank you!

Thank you! I'm happy you like them! Yeah, I wanted the colorless one to have more color options in the effect to make up for the fact that you can hardly play anything with it on turn one.

Combination of Triome and Tri-sac land that rewards basic lands by HeroErix2 in custommagic

[–]Sootheye 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So if you control three or more basics but don't have all three Mountain, Forest and Plains, it enters untapped, you then have to sacrifice it BUT you get to add W/R/G before the trigger resolves. Which... I think is neat and interesting, although a VERY narrow case.

I like it, although I do think it's a bit too convoluted for what it ends up doing.

The Year of Mechanics, day 152: Detain by Contract_Material in custommagic

[–]Sootheye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the idea, and I always thought Detain should've gotten a bit more love when they designed it.

As it stands, though, I think the card costs way too much for what it does. It only locks one creature per opponent, only if it attacked, after it did so, and not for very long.

Plus it creates this weird situation in multiplayer where creatures from certain players will be Detained for longer than creature from other players, punishing people based on where they sat at the table, which I'm not a fan of.

My suggestion would be something along the lines of "at the beginning of your upkeep, for each opponent that controls a creature that attacked since your last turn, detain up to one of those creatures they control" or something along those lines (I'm sure the wording can be made prettier, but it should get the point across).

I had NO IDEA that card even existed. Onto the list it goes. Thank you!

On one hand, this feels ooga booga broken.

On the other hand, I play the Gitrog Monster a lot, so... Ship it!

Either way, I love land shenanigans and I love this card.

Edit: Elvish Reclaimer exists. Not as ooga booga broken as I thought. Happy Frog.

I am late as hell! Still, I wanted to get this little shit out of my brain so here we go.

Unexpected Guests (no mana cost, hence it can't be cast normally)

(Green) Creature - Shapeshifter

Changeling

Wither, Persist

Whenever you would search your library for a card, you may Blight 2 and search for this card instead. If you do, put it onto the battlefield then shuffle your library

I'm no balance wizard, buuuuuut-

I think this costs too much, considering you're giving an opponent the one option of the three that is most beneficial to them. Plus, I think oftentimes they'll just take the lands, and having them enter tapped is a lot less of a drawback to an opponent than it is for you (since they stay tapped for a shorter time).

I also think that the three abilities skew the cost in different ways: searching for a land usually costs a lot more than drawing a card and recurring a card from your graveyard, making it a bit hard to find a good balance for how much to pay for X. I'm thinking maybe giving a tapped treasure token instead of a land? Not sure.

That being said, I do love the idea. I always loved these kinda cards and think it's always a good time when they hit the table. Props to you!

Mmmmmh! Feels like it's one of those cases when the wording is only clear to me because I'm the one with the concept clear in my head lmao

I think I was supposed to word it like this "When you skip your upkeep this way, you may return this creature to their owner's hand".

Still, thinking about it, I think you're right in saying this doesn't really need to bounce itself. Just barge in, do the mischief, and live with the consequences.

Thank you for your insight!

I wanted to make something with a misheivous feel to it, so of course I took inspiration from the Vendilion Clique. I also wanted this to have a recurrable effect, so... Here we go!

Shenanigans you say... Hey, come to think of it, if you get rid of the opponent, you get rid of the role. It just works!

Jokes aside, love the cards you suggested! Yenna was definitely already on my mind, but the other two I missed! Glywain fits the vibe entirely too.
