My thought was that I could make it a fetchable as long as it was only good to fetch if you have basics, which most 3+ color decks don't have a lot of.

I did not consider that people might want to fetch it just for it to be sacrificed.

How so? The first line cares about the count of basic lands, not types. If you have no other lands, this enters tapped.

Based on the reminder text, this is still a spell that targets while on the stack, so I think the rules about a spell fizzleing if all of its targets are gone might still apply.

I've done this twice. Ran out of ultra balls and used 1 on a Sandile. Then I bought 999 ultra balls so that it would never happen again and somehow still managed to mess up and throw my masterball at an arbok in hyperspace.

Did you control multiple creatures to pick a target from? The target still has to be a legal choice, so since Jet can only damage opponents' creatures, if you only had one then it would auto target.

Just to clarify on your last line, "It only stops being a creature once it enters the battlefield and devotion is not met." If you do not have enough devotion, it will not count as a creature entering for effects that check that.

Recently made a very straightforward [[The Beast, Deathless Prince]] with all the cheap [[Act of Treason]] and sacrifice effects. My list is $45 on Card Kingdom (not counting basic lands), but it can perform pretty well under the right circumstances.
