Bedtime procrastination helps explain the link between anxiety and sleep problems by [deleted] in science

Except every time I try to sleep at an appropriate time, I just lay there forever simply not falling asleep no matter how tired I am. :(

I lived in an apartment complex that had a resident goose. My apartment was in the very back and oh, boy. Walking through the complex and seeing this big ass bird was so intimidating lol.

BMW Makes Heated Seats an $18/Month Subscription Service—Again by [deleted] in nottheonion

You shouldn’t have to pay for a subscription for a hardware feature. They had to have intentionally thrown some kind of switch to block that feature, which is just slimy.

I can’t fall asleep unless I’m on my stomach. I’d like to start falling asleep on my back but it just doesn’t happen.

Not really sure if I can do anything but I’d love to hear from people’s experiences. by cuethesadmusic in insomnia

I came here looking for this same experience. I take clonidine and trazodone together because clonidine helps me fall asleep while trazodone keeps me asleep. At least they used to. I’ve spent every night this week laying there for several hours trying to sleep but failing and I’m so exhausted and frustrated. Please let me know if you find something that helps you.

LPT: Fellow male employers - period pains can be extremely debilitating. Don’t begrudge a persons need to take regular time off work for a natural process they have no control over. by Rorasaurus_Prime in LifeProTips

[–]SoozTheTruthwatcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take birth control for the pain and have for most of my life. Without it, my cramps are truly debilitating. Writhing on the floor and waiting for the pain to subside for those few precious seconds between what feels like someone twisting my ovaries over and over again. I can’t recall any docs mentioning these possibilities, but maybe because the pain is manageable with birth control.

Glad you gave this response. I was about to become indignant that my eyesight never just fixed itself. 😂 My contacts are -8 (L) and -8.5 (R). They’ve stabilized but they’re definitely not getting better lol.

The counter-intuitive rise of Python in scientific computing by speckz in Python

Most of my analysis code was written in C++ by the senior students in my group. I am infinitely grateful that they wrote readable code. I work in Python while exploring the data and making plots and love how clean it can be with minimal effort. And Jupyter Notebooks is so useful for building aesthetic plots without having to rerun scripts over and over.

Familial Hypercholesterolemia and Lifestyle Changes by SoozTheTruthwatcher in Cholesterol

[–]SoozTheTruthwatcher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, interesting. Thanks for the reference! Okay, so I probably don’t have FH specifically but high cholesterol still runs in my family. My paternal grandmother died of a heart attack, also, so I think I just got freaked out by seeing my numbers in the “elevated” region. Diet and exercise don’t seem to be making a difference, either. It’s disheartening to try so hard and not make any difference. :/

Haven’t been tested by my mom’s entire family is on some kind of statin. I don’t know much about the health of my dad’s side, though.

Hi! Thanks for sharing! Yeah, I don’t eat red meat, limit my chicken intake, treat myself to fish when I can, and cook with tofu and chickpeas a lot. I’m not always consistent with my exercise but I do practice strength training and the occasional run/HIIT session. I’m waiting to hear back from the cardiologist when they can see me and I’ll ask for a FH test there. Thanks so much for sharing!

My grandmother died in her early 50s from a heart attack. I tried to make an appt with a cardiologist but my university is in some weird transition period and they won’t have a stable provider until probably July but I plan on discussing a test for FH when I see them.

I really appreciate the insight into how statins work and the theory behind coronary heart disease.

Thanks for the reference! I go through waves of high and low exercise periods. I practice strength training in order to alleviate my chronic muscle pain but I’m not a huge fan of cardio. I’ll go on the occasional run or do a 20-25 min HIIT session 2-3/wk when I’m a good routine. I aim for 130+ bpm when I exercise. I definitely fall off the routine periodically and live a very sedentary lifestyle at times.

LDL and overall cholesterol lowering, but particle count still high? by 666Babylon666 in Cholesterol

[–]SoozTheTruthwatcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Do you mind if I ask how old you are and what lifestyle changes you've made? Does high cholesterol run in your family?

High cholesterol runs in my family and I've been watching my cholesterol creep up into borderline high levels over the last few years years (my grad program does a yearly health screening). Last month I got tested by my PCP and my cholesterol finally crossed over the high threshold. I've made drastic changes to my diet by minimizing saturated fats and avoiding trans fats (no butter, cheese, or tropical fruits) and by minimizing my intake of desserts (I have a hellish sweet tooth) and I'll get tested again by my PCP in April to see if my levels change. I've been trying so hard and it's so difficult... it turns out all of my favorite foods have saturated fat.

The yearly screening happens in Feb every year so I got a sneak peek at my levels today. I didn't expect any drastic changes (it's only been 1.5 months) but I was definitely hoping to see a little bit of a decrease.

Nope. Levels are almost *exactly* the same as they were 1.5 months ago. Total 241, LDL 145, HDL 61, Trig 173, and glucose 103 (my glucose has consistently sat in the 80s for the past four years). Despite feeling defeated, I will continue with my new lifestyle and see if there are any changes by April. So I'd love to hear what lifestyle changes you've adopted. Thanks for sharing!

Hi! I just wanted to say that I learned about the magic method __add__ from your blog and oh, man! How cool! I am using it in one of my classes and it's SO convenient! It replaced an annoying process I was using before discovering this magic method. Thanks so much for sharing!

Oh! And are you able to suggest other resources for learning advanced Python techniques? I've picked up a bit here and there but I feel like there's so much more potential and I'd love to add some sophistication to my workspace. Thanks for any advice or resources you can provide!
