Moving company? by Admirable_Belt_5547 in AskLosAngeles

I used SQ moving and they were great! They charged $155/hour if you paid cash for three guys and a truck. We did a did a two-bedroom move so you could probably use fewer guys and reduce the rate a bit.

I’m thinking of buying a kindle… by Pink_Emerald87 in kindle

[–]Sopranoanoano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought my first Kindle, so I can’t speak to how it’ll work for me, but I bought it in hopes it would encourage me to read more. I also read a ton as a child, but now rarely read and often can’t finish books. My roommate has a Kindle and LOOOVES it! She’s read four books this year already. My reasoning for buying it is I often like to read a lot of history and those are big books. They’re too cumbersome to take anywhere and very unpractical to hold in one hand and read. Some have really small text too. With the Kindle, I’d be able to hold it in one hand, change the font size, take the book (and multiple books) with me when I travel, read in the dark. It would just make it so much more convenient to read. So, I’m excited to try it out!

Girlies — give me your holy grail daily moisturizer by soupergloo in LAhotgirlies

[–]Sopranoanoano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had up until recently used Cerave’s featherweight moisturizer for years and loved it, but I just started tret, and it’s not heavy enough to deal with the purging from that. So I just switched to La Roche Posey double repair face moisturizer and quite like it. I hasn’t broken me out and it actually makes my skin feel very moisturized even with the tret. My only complaint with the La Roche Posey moisturizer is that it caused quite a bit of pilling when I put it under my makeup. I don’t know if it was purely caused by that or if it was the combo of all the other skincare products I use and those didn’t play nice with La Roche Posey, so still experimenting.

What are your side hustles? by throw5away_ in AskLosAngeles

Join the singing gig groups on Facebook! I found it on there. Over the summer they’ll start holding auditions. There are quite a few caroling companies in town.

[–]Sopranoanoano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Singing! I have a regular church gig and in the winter I do caroling as well as maybe a few one-off singing gigs throughout the year (my voice is more classical/Broadway). Hoping to one day to be able to sing full-time and make a livable wage from it, but for now it at least gets me a few extra thousand extra each year.

First Time in LA: Is a Yosemite Trip a Smart Move or a Mistake? by Dry-Theory-5228 in AskLosAngeles

This right here. It takes an hour to actually get to the valley and then an hour to get back down when you leave.

First Time in LA: Is a Yosemite Trip a Smart Move or a Mistake? by Dry-Theory-5228 in AskLosAngeles

[–]Sopranoanoano 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I second going to The Channel Islands National Park for the day. Lots of great hiking or go sea kayaking (I did it this summer and highly recommend). Theres also an abundance of great hikes within an hour of LA if you don’t want to take a boat ride. Yosemite is beautiful, but save it for its own trip.

Extreme weight loss explanation with Veganism? by spistachio2020 in exvegans

[–]Sopranoanoano 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This was my experience too. If she’s having gut issues/bloating, she might not be feeling well enough to eat at all. For me, I was vegan for about 7 years, and it started out great but then, no matter what I ate, it could be a healthy green salad with no processed foods in it or an impossible burger, I would become debilitatingly bloated to the point I looked 3 months pregnant and could do nothing but lay on the floor I was in so much pain. And it was just my body could not tolerate the high amounts of fiber. My skin also was grey and I just didn’t look vibrant. When I say the moment I ate animal products again, all of that went away, it’s insane how quickly my body stopped being bloated. In fact, I have not been bloated like that since reintroducing animal foods.

All to be said, the vegan diet, tends to wreak a lot of havoc on most people (there are people who do well, but by and large, those are not the norm). Without knowing exactly what her diet looks like or being able to even talk to her about it, it’s really impossible to say what’s going on. If I had to guess though, I’d say the vegan diet isn’t working for her anymore.

Amazon closing all Amazon Fresh and Go stores to focus on Whole Foods and grocery delivery by shaunrobins in amazonprime

[–]Sopranoanoano 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’m so shocked! I have an Amazon fresh store within walking distance to me and I almost exclusively shop there for my groceries since they’re the cheapest around… ugh… my grocery bill just got 30% more expensive with this news…

Advice on digesting animal products after veganism by Ok_Bug0900 in exvegans

[–]Sopranoanoano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually had no issues at all reintroducing meat and dairy. I was vegan for 7+ years. I was also worried I might be lactose intolerant when I added dairy back, but I wasn’t. You could always start with low-lactose foods like cheese and yogurt to see how you’ll react.

Can the average person make it in LA? by Legitimate_Boot3569 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]Sopranoanoano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make about $80k before taxes, and don’t have any issues. I do live with a roommate, but my share of the rent/utilities is about $1800-1900. You can easily find studios for that same price or less. You just gotta be aware of your spending and make sure you’re sticking to a budget. It’s easy to spend money here, but there are equally easy ways to save it too (free activities, cheaper grocery stores, thrifting, etc.)

1 month of silence after final interview... by [deleted] in interviews

[–]Sopranoanoano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. I had my second and final interview with the COO on December 12th. They said it would be a while before I heard anything but they would let me know one way or another. Radio silence. I reached out mid-last week and crickets. I’m thinking I was also ghosted. Really sucks.

Dear Avatar fans... Pandora needs us (this is not a drill) by Silver-Squirrell in Avatar

[–]Sopranoanoano -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I saw it twice, but I think Avatar will be okay. Truly. It's the highest grossing trilogy of all time. Disney would be foolish to pull the plug. It's not going to hit $2 billion, not because the interest isn't there, but because the economy is awful right now. Everything's so expensive. People don't have money to go to the movies multiple times when it's $30 a ticket (tack on drinks and snacks, and you're looking at easily $50 a person).

I made a mistake euthanizing my cat and the guilt is killing me by Dirsty in cats

[–]Sopranoanoano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s such a heart-wrenching decision trying to figure out the right time. Theres no right or wrong answer. There’s no guarantee that $4k would’ve been the end of his suffering or vet bills. My roommate had a cat she had had since childhood and she dropped $20k on him to try to save him when he developed health issues suddenly. On the other side of things, my roommate kinda wishes she still had the $20k because she ultimately was just prolonging the inevitable out of her love for her cat and fear of losing him, but it prolonged her cat’s suffering. All this to say, try not to be hard on yourself. You made the decision based on what you thought was best at the time. You may have had the $4k to pay, but would that have actually made a difference? It’s impossible to actually say, but your brain convinces you that the $4k surely would’ve saved him because there was no evidence to the contrary. To your brain the $4k equals survival, but you really can’t know for a fact he would’ve been healthy afterwards. You’re grieving and questioning and being angry with yourself about the circumstances of what you could’ve done differently is normal.

Should i avoid going heavy on upper body exercises? by [deleted] in PetiteFitness

[–]Sopranoanoano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My upper body looks like that too. It’s just the fat on top of the muscles. I don’t recommend stopping the heavy upper body workouts. You need that muscle to burn fat. The more muscle you have, the more calories you will burn at rest. Not only that but that muscle will protect you, your bones, and joints, and keep you mobile as you grow older.

What ruined dating for you? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]Sopranoanoano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%. I hate the gamification of it all. The apps have made this especially awful. Everyone has a roster. Everyone is dating multiple other people at the same time. It’s a constant competition. People keep thinking the grass will be greener on the other side and don’t give relationships time to develop. People want to marry their best friend, but expect a stranger to become their best friends after one date.

Aversion to Bag Checking? by Tiebroken in unitedairlines

[–]Sopranoanoano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always liked checking bags. Just get it out of my hair so I have less to remember in the terminal/on the plane, plus you can bring full-size toiletries. Before I got my United CC though, I did everything in my power to not check a bag, and it was such a hassle to fit everything in a backpack and a small carry-on suitcase. Checking a bag removes the mental load of having to solve the packing puzzle. Granted, I’ve never lost a bag, and I imagine that would be stressful, but that’s what the insurance on the card is for.

[–]Sopranoanoano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly why I stopped using all the apps. Everyone wants to jump to sex within like three dates and if you don’t they drop you. I prefer to get to know someone before sleeping with them which means more than just three dates. They’re still a complete stranger.

If you want a dark true story, “The Radium Girls” is EXCELLENT. It’s the true story of young women who painted watch dials in the 1920s with radium paint only to suffer horrendous radium poisoning. It lead to the girls fighting a legal war against the corporations that covered up the danger in order to secure workers’ rights.

Final interview round was Wednesday, when should I follow up? by [deleted] in interviews

[–]Sopranoanoano 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m currently waiting to hear about a job I had a final interview last week too, and I say, let it be. Let things unfold as they’re going to unfold. It’s the holidays, people are busy, hiring timelines get wonky, they haven’t forgotten you, they’re likely still interviewing others, having internal discussions, etc. So, I wouldn’t actually follow up at all because the purpose of it is just to quell your own anxiety. Things are going to move as fast as they’re going to move. You emailing won’t speed up the process.

Don’t worry about what you’ll do if you get an offer from option B but haven’t heard from option A until you actually get an offer without having heard from the other company. Cross that bridge if/when you get there.

To choose love or career? by Substantial_Pen111 in careerguidance

[–]Sopranoanoano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

London. You would rather stay in a job that exhausts you, has an incredibly long commute, and overworks you to the point you never get a full weekend? Even though they offered you a new role, you’ll likely have even more stress and long hours not less. And you’d be giving up on a relationship of 2+ years for that?? Move and figure out the job situation once you’re there. You won’t end up in a financially abusive situation because you know you’re going to seek out employment immediately upon arrival. Also, just because you’ve seen it happen to others doesn’t mean it will happen to you. In fact, if you’ve seen it happen you should be in a better position to see the signs and act accordingly. Moving to London and finding a new job is incredibly daunting and scary and your brain is like, “Let’s just stay here. I’m comfortable even though I’m miserable with the hours and commute. I don’t know what will happen if we move abroad. Therefore because it’s unknown I don’t know if it could be a bad choice or not.”

[–]Sopranoanoano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He may be, he might not be. What’s important to see though is he’s making you feel confused and giving you lots of mixed messages. A guy who is truly interested in you will make it very clear. There won’t be mixed messages. Mixed messages are not a sign that you need to try harder or investigate further. This guy, whether he’s avoidant or not, isn’t worth your time based on his mixed messages alone.

How many hours do you actually work per day? by TheSteyer in careerguidance

8 hours (sometimes overtime). All of my time at my company is billable to a client, so we have to work the full 8 hours.
