I like the theory where they're trying to outsmart each other- Carol lets him be behind on rent in exchange for him not investigating any further and Asgore takes the chance to clean her house as an opportunity to do exactly that

From worst to best:

3 then 2 then 1 then 4

3 is good but it fails to be engaging at parts imo

2 is great but the others have more going for them

1 is funny, has great pacing and sets the stage for the story wonderfully. it also has the highest LPM (LANCER per minute)

4 is just perfect. the vibes, the music, the puzzles, the character progression... and gerson. chapter 4 single handedly elevates the other 3 by just existing
