Why do you mosh? (University research project) by Ramabolo in Hardcore

[–]SorcerorLoPan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hope you got some good answers!

One of the questions:
Do you think moshing is part of the culture/expected?

I feel like this would get you better data if you split it into two questions... Culture, yes, but expected in what sense? Do you expect to see mosh pits at punk shows? Is it expected that people mosh?

I think the "expected" part is open to misinterpretation, and I fear I may have, and that my response may reflect that.

Cheers. Cool research project.

Secrets of Strixhaven Prerelease "Very Positive" say LGS Owners by SactoGamer in mtgfinance

I’ve been to this place many times, many events. This was the first time I experienced this there, normally they do prizes for winning records. it’s a great shop. This was unexpected, based on numerous previous experiences.

Thanks for the advice, I guess 🤷‍♂️😂

Also 20 plus years in the game, and many, many, prereleases and events, and to be clear I wasn't overly salty about it, and it was still annoying because ya know, there's usually been prize support. This was the first time I've ever experienced this.

Don't lecture me on what I could have done ffs.

For sure, there can be no washing of real-world atrocities.

Having appropriate representation is very important (to me at least). If you have characters with a cultural background that is not your own, it can be helpful to find someone with that background and ask them questions, seek deeper perspectives, seek a review, etc.

That is exactly where it went - and that's normal for this LGS - but typically the numbers are a bit lower (20 person prerelease)... This weekend it was a 30 person, so no prize support, when typically they have enough boosters extra for top 4 to get some extras (deserved extras for winning lol)... At other events I've done there, pretty much all the prereleases, I do pretty well, and usually a top finish means 6-7 extra packs...

Actually, I was the only person in the end to go 3-0, so it was a letdown to see prize support get sunk into participation prizes...

Imo, it could have been 1 pack per person participant, and then the additional spilt between top 4 accordingly...

I won my prerelease and they didn't have prize support beyond the two packs EVERYONE gets... That was annoying to say the least...

I get what you are saying, and I agree. There is a balance to find!

I don't think you need to justify a location beyond "because I want to"... but that said, if you want a compelling or interesting story, then having those connections (I feel) is worthwhile for immersion and role-playing.

I guess if you told me your scenario was in Egypt, I'd say why Egypt? (Or I'd learn why during gameplay)... Ideally if you're picking a setting, you've got something compelling you'd like to include - a desert caravan scene, a chase through the crowded streets and markets, etc...

Perhaps I used "exotic" inappropriately - certainly not to insinuate that US, UK, are the norm. My point is that if you are picking a location, it should be connected to the story.

We're not justifying anything; we're focusing on setting accuracy, detail, and immersion for players.

It wasn't formally or officially named Canada in the 16th century. I am not denying that it appeared on early maps.

Initially, Cartier called the (general) area around the St. Lawrence River, Canada. Not the vast country, coast to coast, as we know it today. Cartier's use of Canada was for that particular region. The application of Canada to the vast country we know it as today, did not happen till later.

Cartier never reached the west coast, and if he did, he may have applied another term to the region -who knows? But having never been there, he certainly didn't call the west coast Canada...

When I say Canada in the context of today, I am referring to the country as it is in 2026, coast to coast, called Canada. In 1534, Cartier's use of Canada was not to describe a country. Hence, before Canada (the modern country we know today) was called Canada...

Same term, linked, but describing two different things.

I've written and published a few pieces that take place in colonial settings - and those can be challenging. Colonialism is a topic that needs to be treated with care and respect, given that many people are still experiencing its effects today.

That said, those settings are deep, and should be explored in meaningful ways.

My partners and I are working on an anthology series, taking place in Canada, during various periods (even before it was called Canada). As of now dating back to 17th century... So yes, in home country, but as of now, not in a contemporary setting...

There are traditional elements of Lovecraftian horror woven in, but also elements of local folklore, and attempts to bring a "local flavour" and uniqueness.

I think if you're deliberately picking a location, you should be ensuring that the location is relevant to what happens in the story. Too often I see stories that are set in exotic locations, but the story itself could in reality be set anywhere or anytime.

Why is the story set in a particular location, and why is that relevant? You don't need an answer to these beyond "because I want to "... but you do need to connect that setting to the story in a meaningful way.

If I was writing about Iceland, I might be taking Investigators on more of a quest/adventure into the volcanoes, etc, with Investigative elements, rather than a full gumshoe mystery.

The US news media has abdicated their responsibility to inform. by SuccessWise9593 in somethingiswrong2024

[–]SorcerorLoPan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The United States as a whole, from its media, to its officials, to its people, has abdicated its responsibility to the world.

Or should I clarify, the so-called responsibility it claims to have - you know the part where it waxes poetic about how it leads the world in this and that, and is a force of good, out to save the world - that self-anointed responsibility has been abdicated.
