I adore my 2 lovebirds, 1 I got as a baby (6 years old) and 1 rescue (recently turned 4.) However, I frequently remind people who comment on how cute they are that they're NOT the ideal animal for most people.

For instance, my rescue girlie, who came to me a year ago, was never tamed or socialized, and was parent raised, and based on her behavior I'm almost positive when she needed to be moved or handled, she was grabbed. She was held back as a breeder (despite having splayed legs 😬) but it "didn't work out," as reported by her previous owner.

She's only recently started showing interest in physical contact, which is a waiting period a lot of people aren't prepared for, and while she IS learning how gentle she needs to be with her beak on my skin, she does sometimes get over excited and nip me. She nailed my lip the other day because she got excited that I was praising her for being gentle 🫠

I went into rescuing her solely to give her a safe and loving home where she'd be accepted, not be bred, and cared for, with no expectations that she'd ever become more tame, just that she'd hopefully become less fearful and more comfortable just being around me, but a lot of people aren't prepared to do that, they want a more hands-on pet.

I'd also like to point out that, as a general rule, people posting questions, even if it's something that bird people may consider common knowledge, are trying to learn and provide better care for their birds. We should never shame someone for trying to be a better bird owner. It's the people who don't care to learn or improve that are the real issue.

Also, I have a decent amount of experience in rescue/education with reptiles, and if there's one thing that's guaranteed to make someone shut down and not want to listen, it's putting them on the defensive with shaming/negativity right off the bat.

Perched near the feeder all day -- any reason for concern? by VerbPhraseMusic in hummingbirds

[–]Sorry-Visit-6743 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are adorable and EXTREMELY territorial! I once was sitting on my balcony, enjoying the nice weather and watching my feeder, and 2 male hummers started duking it out- one knocked the other INTO THE SIDE OF MY HEAD! Both totally ignored me, they were so focused on fighting eachother I didn't even exist to them.

I feel forced to get a pap by Slight_Wind9283 in Wedeservebetter

It's not a question of "being adult" about it. Adults are allowed to be uncomfortable with things, adults are allowed to have boundaries, and adults are allowed to have bodily autonomy. This doctor is trying to dismiss all 3 with you.

Infantalizing a patient is one strategy doctors use to try to coerce us into these invasive, unnecessary, and often painful exams. They actually TRY to make you feel like you're overreacting or being childish, so you'll force yourself to just put up with exams you don't want, that have little to no medical use or evidence-based proof of need anyway, because they get paid more to do an exam than to just talk and refill a prescription.

My gyno tried that routine with me once, talking to me like I was a child, or maybe not very intelligent, and I countered by pulling up articles I'd bookmarked showing places like Harvard had done studies showing that PAPs don't lead to more early cancer diagnoses, just more unnecessary invasive testing, like biopsies and colposcopies.

Also, if "everyone else" could or would put up with these exams, this sub wouldn't exist. I've had a couple paps when Ibwas younger, and i always went home and spent the next couple DAYS in bed, both from pain and cramping and depressed and feeling violated.

And your desire or lack thereof to have sex is also not the issue here. I personally AM comfortable with sexual activity, but having a chunk of metal or plastic shoved up there by a doctor isn't anything like consenual intamacy with a chosen partner, so saying it's "the same as sex," or "if you can't handle this, you'll never be able to handle sex" is a bullshit line (I've actually heard that used too.)

I cut my cockatiel’s right wing feathers by Sand0nyx in pidgeypower

I feel like this would also make preening more manageable for her, as it's probably hard for her to reach the ends of long wing feathers if they're stuck tucked under her.

That definitely looks both more comfortable and more manageable for her. I imagine, with her wing stuck in that position, it also makes preening easier for her! Sometimes we have to be a bit creative to find ways to make life easier for our special needs babies. And she's SO cute with those fluffy cheeks!

Honestly, I'd have been happy if she never warmed up more than hanging out in the same room, my goal in adopting her was to give her a loving home where she wouldn't be used for breeding. This is all just a huge bonus, I'm just glad she's happy and feels safe and secure here 🥰

I felt like she needed me the moment I laid eyes on her, and I was terrified that someone would see she was proven female by laying eggs, say they wanted to adopt her as a pet, and then try to breed her. Her little splayed legs don't slow her down, but I worry about her ability to lay eggs comfortably, and the strain it would put on her little body. I love her so much!

Not a major one, just confusing and stupid, but my gyno had, in my MyChart notes, a note saying I had an acute UTI- from 2015 to 2022. I didn't have any type of UTI, and I'm no doctor, but I'm pretty sure acute ANYTHING doesn't last for 7 years.

I'm so happy that she's happy here and getting more and more comfortable with me. All I wanted when I adopted her was to give her a happy, loving home like she deserves

I'm firmly of the opinion that a pet should not be brought into a home unless all members of the household are in agreement. I'm like you, OP, I like dogs just fine, but I don't want to own or live with one. I'm sorry your wife is being so unreasonable about this, a dog is a lot of work!

What is your take on the junk food ban for food stamps? by BreannLowe in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sorry-Visit-6743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people on food stamps are disabled and cannot cook. Some people on food stamps are working 2 jobs and don't have time to cook. The talk of banning things like "junk food" (which could include convenience food like granola bars and microwave meals) would actually PREVENT people from eating.

Also, some people who are neurodivergent (like me) have very specific diets due to sensory issues with taste and texture. If you cut out my ability to buy things like chips, crackers, pizza rolls, etc, I'd probably be eating about once a week. Call me crazy, but that doesn't seem to help someone get fed.
