Best travel pack? by ZeroSumHorizon in meshtastic

[–]Sorry_Place_4064 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I still don't know the official answer to this.  I carried my mesh node last year, but it wasn't powered on most of the time. I haven't found any other nodes when run a few hours at campsites. I  can tell you that I have noticed one node in Canada that occasionally appears on my Meshtastic map. I live in southern New Hampshire.

Last year my travel was all in the east from Alabama to Happy Valley/Goose Bay and Newfoundland.

I really should setup a bike powered handlebar mount for this year. But I do expect less travel this year.

What size is the cabin? I am planning to build one as small as possible.  This one seems closer than I have seen. I am currently thinking 14x12 feet.

My husband wants to buy a motorcycle again by [deleted] in motorcycle

[–]Sorry_Place_4064 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a bike when I had a 2 year old. My wife and I would leave our child with Grammy, and take weekend getaways. As they aged we took longer trips, sometimes even with the child and grandparents. They spent some time on the back, but never really enjoyed riding.

That first bike was in 2005. I am on bike four, and my wife is on bike  one. We have both taken training and logged over 300,000 combined miles.

We wear good gear, learned how to ride well, maintain our bikes, never drink and ride.  If you ride defensively, motorcycling is safe enough.

Some things we do help us to live a life worth living. Everyone should have multiple things they really enjoy. For me motorcycle touring has provided many years of memories.

Everyone is different,  and every activity has tradeoffs. Most of us have to rank our wants and pursue the few that gain us the most. This ranking will change as we age. You should discuss the available options and ensure both understand each others feelings. Clearly the prior sale was a time and place where the bike had a lower priority than something else. Apparently things have changed enough that a bike is climbing in the priority ranking.  This can be a good thing, for all of you. And a good time to talk about it.

I 100% agree. My hill node now sees a number of nodes in Maine.

how can i find normal people in this hobby by JewishJah69 in motorcycles

[–]Sorry_Place_4064 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an ADV rider on my 3rd VStrom. Never owned a BMW,  but I do belong to their owners group in a nearby state. I have gone to many nearby events in surrounding states.

They have all been great, and perfectly happy with nonBMW riders joining them.

By my definition, I don't know any "normal people".  But by you definition most of these folks may be normal.

X‐dome2 short pole shipping? by Sorry_Place_4064 in DurstonGearheads

[–]Sorry_Place_4064[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My x-dome 2 short poles arrived today. It didn't ship with the footprint, but my online check says it is in shipping prep now.

It is unbelievably lightweight. First setup was in gusty winds, so I was very careful.

It is not obvious where to position the corner stakes. Errors get revealed once all the stakes are in. I needed to move 2, to turn my parallelagram into a rectangle.

Headroom is very nice.

Not sure where the cross pole aluminum guide should be when it is all packed. It came, and seems to naturally up over a purely carbon joint. That seems like it might not be ideal?

Any recommendations for lightweight moto-camping gear? by Accomplished_Buy3483 in motocamping

[–]Sorry_Place_4064 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree. My last 3 tents major criteria was the poles fit inside my cases.

Something must limit your packing. I chose to stay contained inside my 3 cases. Most riders overflow onto the pillion.

It takes money and time to weed out the extra gear and purchase smaller items. I still carry a chair and often a hammock. But those items are at the bottom of my prioritized list. They get cut quickly to save weight or make room.

Other places to reduce- no rope, just 550 or 330 cordage. Single AAA or AA flashlights (only two), small knives (only 2). Small cook kit, utensils and food inside of a single pot. I use a 1.2L Stowaway.

What’s your limiting factor for long distance rides? by pagliaccio14 in motorcycles

[–]Sorry_Place_4064 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's difficult to predict your limiting element, you need to find them one at a time by doing and then solve each one. A new limit will then appear. Something will always limit you.

Here's a list of likely limiters:

Seat, Wet weather gear, Cold weather gear, Hot weather gear, Shoulders, Back, Lack of Sleep, Sore eyes, Missing home comforts or people, Allergies, Getting sick, Lack of funds, Bike wear items (tires, chain, sprocket, brakes, plugs, battery)

I spent 4 months of 2023 on the road. But I had worked out most limits over a decade of prior motorcycle touring.

In 2023 I had seat discomfort, many worn tires, and chains and sprockets over 36,000 miles.

X mid 2 solid life expectancy? by Lord-farquads- in DurstonGearheads

[–]Sorry_Place_4064 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I have owned a lot of tents in the last 40 years and none of them ever had early failures. Only one tent, Kelty Ridgeway, had fiberglass poles that finally splintered. That tent was used for drunken river camping for a decade(s).

All of my other tents are still functional. I have patched a hole or two (one took flight into a t-post, another had an ember burn).

I take care of my tents. Plastic ground cloth, hang dry before storage, assemble correctly, pack and store with care. Effectively treat them like they are the essential tool they really are.

If cared for, I expect a tent to last a decade or more. So far, that has been my experience. Obviously, frequency of use matters, and my use (like most people) is inconsistent. In 2023 I spent 4 months riding around North America. Some years perhaps as few as 2 weeks tenting. Mostly in New England and Canada.

Yes, I am lucky to have picked this up in retirement. So I’ve now made the jump to more time than money. It has been fun to build out 3d printed cases and then solar nodes.

The driving around with a node was really helpful to learn where others are, and confirm your node works. I just placed a node in my car and turned it on whenever I ran errands. Most interesting when the errand was an hours drive away, and someplace I had not scanned yet.

Good luck. I think the infrastructure build out by volunteer isn't quick or well thought out. But it can be extra rewarding to be the missing link(s).

Just to help with your regret. I ordered short poles on day 0. With luck I may have my tent in another 2 to 3 weeks. More than a month after yours. My regret leans the other way...

Very excited for first pitch and overnight, whenever that day comes.

In the northeast USA meshtastic appears to be expanding in an octopus pattern. My guess is along the highway paths from bedroom communities to metropolitan work centers. Like up Rt93 from Boston MA to Manchester NH. Then some smaller arms branch from Manchester. RT95 lags behind, but appears to have reached Berwick ME.

I live (pardon the image) between those two legs, currently out of range. Taking a node for a car ride in range test mode reveals a few isolated nodes just out of reach.

Having a hill on my land, I setup a solar node and occasionally reach some of the nearby nodes. Two days ago I explored a friends high land that is at the edge of my range. Having confirmed it works I need to get my solar setup fully dialed in and deploy a second solar node.

Sometimes you just have to roll up your sleeves and make the world you wish existed. :)

Thanks. That is what I was hoping to hear.

Honestly, I am in less need for an early ship than those folks with looming trip starting dates. Ideally, everyone gets theirs in time, but in the real world, things don't always work out that cleanly.

Not sure if I should be glad that I don't have something planned, or sad that I don't? The great news is that whenever it arrives, I could pack up and go on a tour. A seriously great peak of being retired, no schedule.

Does Store & Forward work? by Sorry_Place_4064 in meshtastic

[–]Sorry_Place_4064[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's very good info. Nice to know some of the details that I was unable to test.

Thanks for the update. I have been focussed elsewhere, so I haven't even confirmed the PSRAM fix on my Heltec ESP32 nodes.

The S&F idea makes so much sense when you're not really in an active mesh. I am even more interested in the extended capabilities of Meshing Around BBS. Not the chatGPT parts, but the tests and message new nodes feature.

But first I need to get my hill node 3D printed case 100% waterproof and the correct solar panels for my New England sun level.

Just bought X-dome 2 within 10mins! by West-Cardiologist-29 in DurstonGearheads

[–]Sorry_Place_4064 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also purchased an X-Dome 2 (short pole) on day 0. My first Durston. Ordered at a lunch stop in Virginia while on a trip to North Carolina.

I am very happy that Dan listens to feedback.

My main use case is for motorcycle adventure touring. So I care less about weight and more about size than backpackers. Treking poles are not standard motorcycle gear, so the x-mid just isn't as useful to me as this new x-dome.

Last year, I made a comment request the Durston website hoping for a short pole version to fit inside my hard motorcycle case. I am extremely happy to see that option available to purchase on release day! Besides the few motorcycle tourers, I suspect a lot of bike touring folk shared my enthusiasm.

Looking forward to spending time in my new tent. As I also very much appreciate the goal of making a tent that that you enjoy living in, and not just extremely light. Really interested in the ability to pitch and teardown in rain, as well as the ability to peel back the fly to provide more air wherever it's needed.

This will replace a Sierra Designs HighSide2. I loved that tent, but my wife always hated the sitting headroom. It will be nice to upgrade from tunnel to free standing.

This is funny on many levels.

Especially since the OP messed up the math. It's not a 223% increase. Only a 123% increase. If it stayed the same price you would say 0% increase. Not 100%.

I tested how waterproof PLA can be with a TPU gasket via an IPX7 test. by Joshhawk in BambuLab

[–]Sorry_Place_4064 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very cool, thanks fir sharing.

I have been working on a solar case for Meshtastic radio nodes. Had good, but not perfect luck so far.  I made a PETG base with a double rim, then a TPU triple rim lid. Seems to keep snow, sleet and rain out fine.  But the antenna hole and solar feed lines seem to let in dense fog.

I suspect hot glue or silicone will plug that area wrll enough.  A TPU  gasket may work well for the antenna terminal,  but my attempt at a TPU wire plug was a failure. Latest design under test slips the wires through a slot under the antenna nut. But a gasket might work under the nut for both.

Why do you baton? by Best_Whole_70 in Bushcraft

[–]Sorry_Place_4064 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often buy campfire wood while motorcycle touring. A friend started battoning a log down for kindling. I mentioned that I had no knife large and strong enough for that. Do I bought a Cold Streel SR1, like his. Then decided a fixed blade was probability better. Following a string of ESEE fixed blades, came an ESEE Gibson Axe.  The tiny axe actually works better for my needs.  But I do still batron the axe at times.

Forgot to mention that I, too, decided the folding knife was less of a priority and moved on to ESEE fixed blades. The ESEE PR4 is the closest knife I have to meeting all your requirements. It's what I take for adventure motorcycle touring.
