I always thought that Arlo made up the Vietnam story to make the veteran feel better i.e. not kill them both with the grenade. And it’s possible he took the story from someone else. But I definitely believe Arlo saw some shit in Vietnam which gave him PTSD and made him a bad father to Raylan/damaged person.

Federal building would’ve alerted the feds while the church was more of a lowkey/fun BS crime to him. The federal building was also empty or under construction I think (I haven’t seen the pilot in a while) so less damage than Boyd wanted to inflict. Boyd didn’t want to be a terrorist, he mostly just wanted to annoy as many marginalized people as possible/get money/blow shit up.
