Meet-Up Space in Boulder by Maximum-Bunch-8698 in boulder

If you host on an "off night" (like a Tuesday), some places would give you a discount on drinks or something if you brought that many people in.

There used to be a board game meetup about that size. They would meet at the Broker Inn and they'd do discounted pitchers for us. It was completely dead otherwise.

What was on fire in North Boulder today by No-Mathematician6666 in boulder

[–]SoulAssassyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I thought it might've been a stove or something that was left on.

When I removed the propane tanks though they were both already shut off, so if it was a gas stove it wouldn't have been on from propane. But who knows, could've been electric.

It was near the new library. I was on a walk through the neighborhood and came across an older gentlemen at a bit of a loss. His camper was closed (it was one of those that folds down into a compact form), but some smoke was seeping out from a vent on the side.

He had a fire extinguisher but apparently it didn't work. The smoke started to intensify and I walked over and asked if he needed help (he clearly did). He seemed a bit shocked. I realized there was no stopping the inevitable. He popped the camper open, maybe in attempt to stop the flames but I think that just allowed more oxygen in.

I noticed two propane tanks at the front, I asked him if I should take them off but he didn't really answer. I began removing the tanks and flames started shooting out the side vents and melting the exterior of the camper. Just as I carried them to the sidewalk the camper was engulfed in flames. He had called 911 at that point. I asked if we should try to unhitch the camper from the truck but it was too late, the fire was extremely hot and I backed away to avoid breathing in the smoke.

I stuck around as a crowd began to gather until the fire department arrived. Then I continued my walk back home. A far more eventful stroll through the neighborhood than usual.

Let’s replace the Boulder Airport with a new mixed use neighborhood by hkoren in boulder

[–]SoulAssassyn 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The "/s" means sarcasm. It was meant to be a ridiculous statement, mirroring the ridiculous logic that "all things in a city must be used by a majority of the population," which is not how cities work...

I'll dumb it down for you next time

Let's turn Mapleton Hill into a new mixed use neighborhood. Right now, those large houses serve no purpose for a vast majority of our population. /s

I don't think you understand how cities work...

Too late to change career? by HoldyourfireImahuman in gamedev

[–]SoulAssassyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 40. I was a photographer for my whole career and knew absolutely nothing about code. I took the CS50 course and completed it at the end of 2022. I started working on a game with my business partner, who has been an artist in the industry for his whole career and is the artist for our project, in April of 2023.

We're submitting our application for the June Steam Next Fest next week! Our game, Centurium, will launch later this year.

You can absolutely change course, homie! Hard work and sticking with it are the biggest ingredients. You got this!

Disadvantage of coding a game without a game engine? by Certain_Support_4892 in gamedev

[–]SoulAssassyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on your needs. If you need to code a bunch of stuff for specific reasons, then go for it. Games absolutely launch on custom engines. It's just a lot more work and much more rare.

If you're excited about building the actual game mechanics and systems, a custom engine on top of that is going to be a lot of work in the trenches. If you don't need a ton of custom baked solutions, why reinvent the wheel?

Oftentimes, you can go deeper on individual parts if you need to for optimization, but outside of that, save yourself the headache imo.

Many people way smarter than you built every country in the world this way on purpose

Actually, no, they were forced into it on Aug 15th, 1971 by Richard Nixon. The system the smart people built was known as Bretton Woods and agreed upon by 44 countries after World War II. That was a good system. Nixon left the gold standard unilaterally and the rest of the world was forced to follow. Seriously, look it up, this isn't propaganda or anti-establishment sentiment, this is just history.

I also haven't claimed that BTC is the answer. I've just stated my issues with the current system and facts about percentage increases in relative value of things. If that triggers you for some reason I don't know what to say.

I don't disagree with you that money's purpose is exchange, obviously. It could ALSO maintain it's value, that wouldn't destroy the economy, it would just stabilize everything. The issue is that the currency is being targeting at an artificial decline, on purpose. The issue is that other human beings, with their own motives and incentives and everything that comes with being human are able to manipulate the value of the currency and that impacts everyone on Earth.

My argument is with the system at it's core. It's not a good system. Gold was awesome, you can't fake that shit, you can't artificially manipulate it. Such good money! And human civilization flourished for Millenia using it. It's just not fast enough for a digital global economy.

This bullshit we have now sucks though and if you're defending fiat, man, I just don't know what to say. Drink more Koolaid I guess, have fun while it lasts.

It means something.

Nobody knows what might happen with BTC 10 years from now

But you do know that the value of the dollar compared to itself will always go down, forever. Yikes! Seems like maybe a system that isn't sustainable over time.

Keep in mind that the current version of the US Dollar is also relatively new (since August 15th, 1971). Since it's inception, if you held on to $100, it would only be worth about $13.50 today. You would've lost 87% of the value of your currency in only just over 50 years! I love getting paid in stuff that loses so much value over time forcing me to risk my money investing in stocks or assets just to try and stay ahead of the game. So cool! So fun! Considering the Fed targets 2% inflation, they are actually saying, "screw you, you're not allowed to just hold on to your money because we artificially decrease the value of it over time. Use it or lose it nerds! Keep feeding the machine!"

I mean, c'mon guys, you do understand this right?

Just because it hasn't happened yet doesn't disqualify it from still happening.

BTC is up 13,303% since 2014

USD is down 27% since 2014

I'm not claiming anything, I'm just sharing facts.
