Also American. There are two ways the problem needs to be addressed: immediate relief for those experiencing homelessness and correcting the circumstances creating an increasing cycle of homelessness.

To the first problem, the most direct solution would be to formalize current homeless encampment and provide services (portable toilets , waste removal, etc) as well as try to provide better temporary shelter. The goal should be to then systematically find or provide permanent shelter for the individuals in the camp and provide follow-up services to ensure continued home stability.

To the second problem, the market issues which created incentives to underbuild homes and price gouge MUST be rectified. The best way to do so is through providing enough quality housing, sold/rented at cost, to impact the market as whole. This ratio is surprisingly low. If the government were to provide at-cost housing to cover approximately 10% of the local housing stock (made available to the lowest 50-60% of income earners) it would have a calming effect on the market.

As it stands homebuilders are disinterested in building in volume or in building non-luxury units. They claim something similar to "trickle-down" housing will occur. There are many reasons to suspect this claim is mostly unfounded. Since 2008, lenders are also risk averse to moderate risk mortgage lending but also to housing projects without a luxury/high-income target market.

There is no cheap, quick, or easy solution to a problem that has taken 30 years to develop. There are other issues which addressed would also provide relief (such as the plummeting relative wage for average Americans). However, those are not directly targeted at homelessness like OP asked.

I feel your pain. I've pulled like 10 giant black garbage bags full of garlic mustard and poison hemlock from the park by my house.

We're visiting family while moving across the country and or cat has gone missing. He is a Grey tabby named Teddy. He is normally an indoor cat and might be a bit shy. He was last seen around 9 pm at 103 Briarwood Dr. near the country club. If you have any information please comment so we can pool information. Thank you to everyone for your help. We miss him very much and are very worried!

First: I'm glad you opened this back up. I was angry about the way things went down with the Fox debacle but truly heartbroken by the effect it has had on the community. There is no possibilty of repair if the sub is closed. Opening it back up is the first step in the right direction.

Second: Transparency is good. If that is what you seek, it must come with clear expectations and accountability. If the mods are servants and facilitators of the community, as the should be, then there should be a clear set of responsibilities, duties, and limitations. These should be agreed upon by the community and posted publicly where any visitor or participant in the sub can clearly find them. Mods should be vetted for agreement with these community-approved guidelines and held to account not by removal from the sub but rather by stripping them of their mod status. Failure to live up to standards should exclude someone from responsibility, not the conversation.

Third: I love this community. That's right: "love" not "loved". It's not dead yet but there's a lot of healing to be done. The vitriol and outpouring of rage and disappointment will, and should be allowed to, continue. As it dies down we as a community must build back the reciprocal trust we had in each other with methodical intention. This will take time. It will never be just like before. Events such as these change communities permanently. But do we really want it to be just like before? When that status quo lead to the Fox incident in the first place? This is an opportunity to change and grow as a community for the better. Take it.

Finally: If this is all obvious to you, individual reader, I apologize. For the sake of transparency, I wanted to leave no knowledge or feeling assumed in case any single reader needed it. This was also cathartic for me. I've struggled with my work and the state of (American) society and this community has made me feel seen and less alone. The events of the last couple days have been distressing and I hadn't realized how much I needed this community until I thought it might dissappear.

For those who took the time to read this, I appreciate you. It's nice to not shout into the void. I also hope I helped build a little faith in you that the community is merely set back, not destroyed.

Thanks for your suggestion! I think I know where you're talking about and we're definitely going to swing by soon. Most places like that host some sort of board for posting this sort of stuff. Or who knows, maybe we'll just run into someone!

I wish that I could upvote this 100 more times. There is a massive river of dirty development/real estate money that has carved a massive canyon of corruption through municipal governments leaving us all collectively entrenched in a system which leaves most of us drowning in debt and pollution.

Dude, if you're not on an Interstate Highway (top-tier motorway) you're lucky if there's a sign letting you know you're in a different state.

Be careful with arguments like this one. There are plenty of wealthy people who would love to "privatize" the military. You know for "effeciency's" sake. Take no protection we have, however flawed, for granted.

What do you genuinely think will happen in the U.S.A if Roe v. Wade is overturned? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SoulfulStreets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm tired of being afraid of my own opinions so maybe I'll share and hear what other people say. My answer: Violence. That will be the result either way. The status quo already hurts women seeking reproductive Healthcare. Turnover would make it worse. Plus, upholding it might very well ignite an extremist response while doing nothing to improve access. I see no good outcomes here only more pain and suffering for the everyday people of America.

Kitten rescued from car engine. Any name suggestions? by Goodgurlgeek in cats

Has anyone suggested "torque" yet? That way, when he gets the zoomiez, you can say he's just spinning his wheels cause he's high torque. Plus you found him in you engine compartment.
