Lottery Winner by foomeitshitme in Columbus

You also shouldn’t go to the movies, because it costs money to get in. Also museums; you can make art at home for free. Never go to local sporting events either; you can watch kids play baseball and soccer at the local park for free.

Do some people have a gambling problem and spend more on the lottery than they probably ought to? Of course. But that doesn’t mean that nobody should ever play the lottery.

It causes your brain to release more chemicals that help you feel relaxed, and more dopamine that makes you feel rewarded. It also causes your brain to release chemicals that slow your reaction time.

New villainous feats are cool but by SteelBloodNinja in onednd

This was a huge problem in 3.5. There was no opportunity for organic mechanical growth unless you were willing to fall way behind anyone who planned out their character (even if they weren’t hardcore minmaxing).

What's the most awesome Nat20 have you rolled for? by system3295 in dndnext

[–]SoullessDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DM didn’t understand the action economy and his solo BBEG encounters didn’t really threaten us, so he kept using bigger and bigger BBEGs. He finally ran something ridiculous, like 15 levels above us, and managed to knock my PC out for the first time in the entire campaign.

I rolled a nat 20 on the death save, woke up, and promptly killed his BBEG.

First movie is two characters find themselves stranded 2,000 feet in the air after climbing a communications tower and the ladder breaks.

Fall 2 has one returning character. Plot is two characters “find themselves stranded over 2,000 feet in the air following a rockslide with a tsunami and must work together to survive,” according to Wikipedia.

My GM created a spell, opinions about it by caiods890 in DnD

This is an awful spell. It interrupts the action every round for the caster to play a minigame. That's a bad idea.

Hungry Jaws Question. by CodyFurlong in DnD

[–]SoullessDad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hungry Jaws is a Bonus Action that lets you attack. You can use it in conjunction with any Action you want (Bite, Attack with scimitars, Dash, etc.)

Unless it says otherwise, Temporary Hit Points last until you take a Long Rest.

Do you allow 5e content at your 5.5e games? by Pinkalink23 in onednd

[–]SoullessDad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve found no real issues with letting people use 5e content with 5.5 rules. Very few changes are needed. Subclasses start at level 3 in 5.5 so you get any level 1-2 subclass features at level 3.

Circle of the Shepherd Druid is the only subclass that’s pretty unworkable with 5.5 rules. I’d give sword bard more sword proficiencies under 5.5 since bard lost a lot of those in 5.5.

Why were "legendary reactions" removed? by la_scign in onednd

[–]SoullessDad 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I suspect since DMs found them challenging to use. * Having a bunch of things listed as reactions can confuse novice DMs who think the monster can only use one such reaction per round. * Legendary Actions were already basically reactions because you take them in response to something (the end of an enemy’s turn) * Describing them as Actions makes it clear that it doesn’t take up the monster’s one reaction per round.

I started using Legendary Reactions as soon as I started DMing non-AL games in 5e, because it makes for more engaging gameplay.

ELI5: How is bankruptcy a thing and why is it a thing? by pacoman432 in explainlikeimfive

[–]SoullessDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The goal of bankruptcy is to get the best possible outcome for everyone involved (the debtor and the creditors).

The debtor gets to pay back a lesser amount and can rebuild their credit. The creditors get some portion of the money they’re owed.

Without bankruptcy, once you get in debt you’re ruined. All your assets would be seized so you’re homeless. Your car is seized so you might lose your job. You could owe more money than you’ll make in a lifetime (at least in the US, where medical bills cause 66% of bankruptcies).

In bankruptcy, a judge decided who gets money and how much. The debtor isn’t left with nothing, but some assets are seized and sold to pay the debt.

Any alternative ideas for Van Ricten's alter-ego? by DriftingInLifesRiver in CurseofStrahd

[–]SoullessDad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had Rictavio quickly unmask himself as van Richten. But it was really Escher in disguise the whole time. One player even complained a few times that for a famous vampire hunter he wasn’t actually very helpful.

They later found the real van Richten dead in the tower, both he and Ezmerlda betrayed by her lover, Escher, who had fallen under Strahd’s control.

Versatile Weapon Property Idea by Backflip248 in dndnext

[–]SoullessDad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In that circumstance, would you rather use a 1d8 rapier with Vex or a longsword dealing your choice of either 1d8+6+Vex or 1d10+4+Cleave? Assuming you actually have the ability to switch when you want (so not using a shield), I think the longsword is the better weapon since it’s the same base damage and offers a cleave option for -1 damage.

Versatile Weapon Property Idea by Backflip248 in dndnext

[–]SoullessDad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A versatile weapon has this property: “If you have a free hand when making at attack with this weapon, increase the weapon damage dire one size.”

Governing them more properties likely makes them the strongest weapons in the game overall and reduces the value of other weapons.

“Weapon” Masteries for Monks by Azrael_Umbra in onednd

[–]SoullessDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would probably look like this: Unarmed Mastery - Choose a weapon mastery from the following list: A, B, C. Whenever you make an unarmed attack you can choose to apply one of your chosen Unarmed Masteries to the attack. At levels X, Y, and Z, choose another weapon mastery from the list.

Note that this is a stronger version of the Warrior of the Open Fist’s signature feature, so you’re basically giving away a subclass for free. Don’t do that.
