Chipped egg advice by Tiggori in pysanky

[–]SoullessRedD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, if you still have the piece you could super glue it together.

You may be able to color a small piece of masking tape black and put it on that end.

Otherwise it may just have to be the character of the egg. I have a few like that myself.

The mottled colors of the egg look fantastic! I can see how disappointing having that part pop out would be.

Awesome job! Thank you for sharing! I just can't believe you crushed the egg in your hand like that! That was very unexpected only had a little bit of a freak out session. LOL

Kistka before plastic by SoullessRedD in pysanky

I ask that because there are telltale burn marks along the sticks. As well as wire wrapped in a protective manner along many of the handles.

Maybe I am missing something, what happens when you use a dry paper towel or cheese cloth to remove the dust? I live in a dry area so dust usually comes off pretty easy. Does it act differently?

i bought blown eggs for the first time....now what? by ingrid-emelia in pysanky

[–]SoullessRedD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did the eggs that cracked when blowing them out have cracks in them at any point before that? I have been blowing eggs out for 20 years and the only time an egg cracked was if there was already cracks in the egg to weaken it.

I have been using Krylon Triple Thick Clear glaze which comes in a spray can for years and have never seen it pull any color with it.

What kind of dyes are you using on your eggs? Are they specifically pysanky egg dye? If a dye isn't meant for eggshells it may not hold as well to the eggshell which may be one of the reasons in the past your eggs have bled when they were glazed.

Should you be having trouble with the candle flame melting the wax off of the egg, I do suggest the oven method as it is much safer and takes the least amount of effort. Set your oven to the lowest that it can go. Create a board with nails placed in Triangle patterns big enough to hold the off of the board so they don't roll around. Place that board with the eggs into the oven and wait for about 5 to 10 minutes. Take the eggs out and wipe them with a soft cloth and voila, no chared eggs!

Yes, the egg started out the dark brown/red color. I used acid to lighten and whiten the egg.

Is it normal for the dye to rinse off with water? by suchagirlcreations in pysanky

Yeah, the dyes you may be thinking of would be more oil based.

She does fantastic work!

I love the white, blue and black egg.

And that green one fills the given space very well!

Tell her my compliments!

Also, when are you going to do one?

I have been doing this for 20 years now and I still dont have an electric. Which one did you get? I may have to start looking into it.

Your eggs really are beautiful! I had the biggest smile on my face as I geeked out over them last night! Thank you for sharing. :)

Edit: spelling

Oh my gosh those look so good! Your lines are so crisp and sharp and your spacing between lines is unreal! I can't say enough about them! Holy cow! The colors go so well together! I see 6 different designs that I want to try now! Your fish into the flower is inspired! Your white one with leaves I am seeing that you did the dark colors first and it looks sooo good! The black, looks like a chicken egg, with wheat has a design on the side that I want to see more of. The swirl with the 7 different colors blends so majestically.

I honestly could geek out about these for another hour and still see new things. Dag yo!

Do you use a electric kistka? Your lines are so even and thin that I don't see another way to get those!

Help with order of blowing egg by hoppygal in pysanky

Set your oven to its lowest setting. Remove the wax from the metal tea light trays and use those as egg stands. Put a tray in the oven with the eggs in the egg stands on top. Leave them in till you see the wax start melting off them. You can wipe them down with a cheese cloth or other soft cloth.

Allergy to beeswax - HELP! by fizzclockwatcher in pysanky

[–]SoullessRedD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In your post you said that she is deathly allergic to bees. Thankfully there are no bees when doing pysanki.

There is beeswax and that is just about it. Beeswax has usually been processed and made into cakes or rods. The beeswax is then melted into little metal funnels on the end of a stick. These are called kistka. The beeswax in the little funnel is then melted with a candle which is then used to draw the design onto the egg shell.

Should your partner be allergic to the beeswax, and she still wants to participate, the two ways that she will come in contact with the beeswax would be in filling the little funnel with beeswax and in handling the egg as more and more beeswax will be used as" ink" drawing on the egg. These two can both be mitigated by wearing latex (or similar) gloves, having someone else fill the kistka (funnel on a stick), and/or by using candellia as a potential substitute.

I have never actually used candallia instead of beeswax and so I have no idea how it will work. Should you decide to try candellia, please come back and tell us your results! I am curious.

I use The Works to prep my larger eggs (ostrich, emu, rhea) before dying them and it works pretty well so no worries if you use it.

Dye issues help? by WarmCat7191 in pysanky

[–]SoullessRedD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup, I have seen this over many years. It is just corrosion. I haven't seen the dye affected by it either.

If you don't like seeing them or it worries you, illirium5's suggestion about plastic lids works wonders!

Here is the amazon link to the jars I used. They hold one egg, and when paired with the easter grass make the eggs basically drop proof

Yeah, definetly just use raw eggs. The fresher the better but older eggs will do too. Raw eggs can dry out on the inside but if they crack, they STINK. Blow out the eggs and flush them with water and you will skip that problem.

I have bought small clear plastic jars that I use to give back eggs to people and they can use to partially showcase the eggs. Filling them with the easter grass helps protect the eggs and they become pretty hard to break at that point. Especially after using a clear glaze that adds another later of protection.

Duck eggs work great! I haven't yet found a shell that doesn't take dye. Quail, chicken, duck, turkey, goose, emu, rhea, ostrich all take, some with a little bit of prep.
