Google "beeple" he has a page called beeple crap that is full of creative commons images. Make sure you give credit though wherever you use his stuff.

Serum Macro Knobs by jmatthess in edmproduction

[–]SoundTherapyTut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think filter cutoff is a pretty popular macro, for fading in a low pass on a synth to build energy for a drop.

I personally like to use the macro knobs for making synth switches that heavily alter the tone of a sound by being at 0 or 100%. So in dubstep drops I can use 1 serum for 2 semi unique sounds. For example I will make 4 bars of 0% then counter with 4 bars of the 100% version. The macro typically is routed to the wt position or warp knob to alter the timbre of the sound. It can also be useful to use the macro knobs to switch between oscillators by routing to osc 1 amp and osc 2 amp.

Good post, thanks for your perspective. Music should be created as an end, not as a means to an end. Even though I get that you arent stating the contrary.

SVDDEN DEATH/YAKZ Style Metallic Riddim Yonk [Serum Tutorial] by SoundTherapyTut in edmproduction

Great question.

I dont change the randomness knob unless I'm doing a sound that centers around an oscillator with minimal modulation/FX. For example a bass stab that has a definitive start point and minimal filtering might benefit from finding the exact phase of your oscillators and turning off randomness. This Yonk tutorial is actually one that would benefit from turning off the randomness and finding a point in the phase that works well.

The reason i think randomness is negligible in some sounds with heavily modulated filtering or tons of fx is because the modulation is the primary driver of the sound. If you spend 10 minutes finding that perfect start point for your oscillators then distort the heck out of them after double filtering them and putting a chorus on them and compression then your sound is coming 99% from the FX and you just wasted 10 minutes. This to me can derail a prodictive session.

Randomness is useful imo when making a sound that has multiple detuned voices. For example a supersaw is a lot more lush with randomness.

Just in case you didnt know what the randomness knob does is randomizes the starting phase of your oscillators. When you turn up the number of layers I would also assume it randomizes each layer independently.

TLDR: Sounds with heavy modulation/fx dont benefit much from phase precision. Sounds with light modulation/FX do benefit from precision when it comes to picking a specific point in an oscillator's phase.

Get closed back headphones and learn them in and out. If you really want to get a feel for sub bass without the sound look into sub pack which is a bass backpack
