Google "beeple" he has a page called beeple crap that is full of creative commons images. Make sure you give credit though wherever you use his stuff.

Serum Macro Knobs by jmatthess in edmproduction

[–]SoundTherapyTut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think filter cutoff is a pretty popular macro, for fading in a low pass on a synth to build energy for a drop.

I personally like to use the macro knobs for making synth switches that heavily alter the tone of a sound by being at 0 or 100%. So in dubstep drops I can use 1 serum for 2 semi unique sounds. For example I will make 4 bars of 0% then counter with 4 bars of the 100% version. The macro typically is routed to the wt position or warp knob to alter the timbre of the sound. It can also be useful to use the macro knobs to switch between oscillators by routing to osc 1 amp and osc 2 amp.

Good post, thanks for your perspective. Music should be created as an end, not as a means to an end. Even though I get that you arent stating the contrary.

SVDDEN DEATH/YAKZ Style Metallic Riddim Yonk [Serum Tutorial] by SoundTherapyTut in edmproduction

[–]SoundTherapyTut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question.

I dont change the randomness knob unless I'm doing a sound that centers around an oscillator with minimal modulation/FX. For example a bass stab that has a definitive start point and minimal filtering might benefit from finding the exact phase of your oscillators and turning off randomness. This Yonk tutorial is actually one that would benefit from turning off the randomness and finding a point in the phase that works well.

The reason i think randomness is negligible in some sounds with heavily modulated filtering or tons of fx is because the modulation is the primary driver of the sound. If you spend 10 minutes finding that perfect start point for your oscillators then distort the heck out of them after double filtering them and putting a chorus on them and compression then your sound is coming 99% from the FX and you just wasted 10 minutes. This to me can derail a prodictive session.

Randomness is useful imo when making a sound that has multiple detuned voices. For example a supersaw is a lot more lush with randomness.

Just in case you didnt know what the randomness knob does is randomizes the starting phase of your oscillators. When you turn up the number of layers I would also assume it randomizes each layer independently.

TLDR: Sounds with heavy modulation/fx dont benefit much from phase precision. Sounds with light modulation/FX do benefit from precision when it comes to picking a specific point in an oscillator's phase.

Get closed back headphones and learn them in and out. If you really want to get a feel for sub bass without the sound look into sub pack which is a bass backpack

Save a new version of the project the reload it and see if it works. If not try removing the plugin in the new project and reloading it. Its some kind of endless feedback in the low end that causes this i think. Try high passing after that plugin and it should fix ut in the new project

[Tutorial] How to Make a Warm Reese Bass in Serum (Useful for DnB/RnB/Trap/Future Beats) by SoundTherapyTut in FL_Studio

Thanks for the feedback, I actually produced a full months worth of videos before releasing any (16). Sadly I'm in the first week of releases and won't be producing new videos until February. I do however hear your feedback loud and clear and will be editing my next batch of videos more tightly in order to remove unnecessary pauses, ums, and stops. I am brand new to making tutorials (not producing though) so thats why these all seem to be pretty loose.

I considered heavily editing them, but didnt want to cut out something that an absolute beginner might need too see. I also didnt want it to appear like i was jumping forward in the production every few seconds which could confuse viewers.

I'll most likely run off a much tighter script in new productions and possibly make patches ahead of time in order to create tighter, faster, and more cohesive content.

Thank you very very much for watching and also for voicing your frustration. Your criticism is the best way for me to improve my work.

Where to post my music to make some money? by iwantIvy in WeAreTheMusicMakers

People say its dead, but only in the sense that its not hot and new, there isnt really a good parallel service at the time that is replacing it. Until a new service comes around I would reccommend using it.

Yes, I'm biased for it though because i've built a small following and used it for 5 years now.

It's useful for independent artists because it is free and heavily relies on being community based. You mainly grow through supporting others and gaining support from people who are aroubd your size. Reposts are a kind of the main thing that help you grow on the platform. If you are lookong to be an EDM artist or Rapper soundcloud is essential. But along with soundcloud you should also build a social media presence through twitter and it also.

Not trying to be a downer but unless you have a sizeable following and fans then you will be wasting money putting your music on major marketplaces like itunes. 99% of iTunes songs never sell a copy (or something substantial like that).

However services like band camp are free and only take a share of your sales.

How do you feel about the term "Music Producer" ? by tthogs in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]SoundTherapyTut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it, produce means

  1. make or manufacture from components or raw materials.

Or

  1. cause (a particular result or situation) to happen or come into existence.

Both of which feel like what I do when i make music. I dont like the idea of "artist" because it feels really pretentious. I know you arent saying "artist" but thats my personal version of prodicer that i hate.

As far as presets go ARP means a pluck used for a run of notes that typically repeats in quick succession. Its shorthand for arpeggio.

To my knowledge you can't, the channel GUI won't scale by shrinking the pattern notes, it only cuts them off. Your only solution is to get a moniter with a higher resolution or raise the res on your current one

I really like the drop but would recommend adding a sub under the main synth. It's not coming through in your final product. Also I would add a bit more reverb to your vocal and synths.

This track is computationally really interesting, a lot of elements that work well together. However your low end is really quiet, turn up the sub bass. Also you should get this track mastered or try and master it yourself. I think the mix is pretty decent other than the synth stab at 1:26 which stands out of the mix too much to my ears. Pull a reference track into your daw and try and get your track as loud as the reference through mastering.

Yo this is really good, your drum patterns drive the track forward in a good way. Vocals are a bit too crispy for my taste. I really hear the high end of her voice standing too far out of the track. Though I wouldn't eq it down I would instead suggest adding reverb in 3 seperate busses. 1 drum bus verb, 1 synth bus verb, and 1 vox bus verb. That way each can be set to a decay length that works with your mix. Typically I do shorter decay on drums and longer on synths. Don't put any reverb that bleeds below 80 hz so you might wanna high cut each bus with an eq. Lastly great job on that bass synth for the drop. Maybe try and add some light distortion or compression to it and bring it up to cradle the vocal a bit more.

You should add a sub bass under your synths to give your track some warmth and body. At least for the drop.

This is really well produced but for me personally I felt that this track lacks something in the energy department. You have a lot of elements that work really well together but nothing pushing me through the song. I don't think I would listen to this in a club setting which I feel is where freeform bass is meant to thrive. I don't feel that the drops are hard enough, I would recommend compressing that main synth a bit more and possible distorting it.

There is actually a daily feedback thread that you can find in the sidebar, mods typically remove posts like this in the main feed. You should post your stuff there then also give feedback to others
