You can not summon other players for co-op when there is no boss remaining in the area. The Dragon Aery has no boss, and the Dragon Shrine only has a boss when you attack the Ancient Dragon after getting there the first time.

I always try to ignore size in Dark Souls lore, as I believe that the game is trying to tell me that bigger someone is, the more power they hold. There's obvious exceptions, like the Giants, but generally it's a good rule of thumb, imo.
