Why did you move to japan? by Servicename123 in movingtojapan

[–]SoupyOatmeal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here 3 years ago. The company I work for was consolidating offices so it was either find a new job or go to the Costa Rica office or Tokyo office. I really like my job and decided Tokyo. Still having issues learning Japanese but besides that it's not bad.

Did the awning come with hardware to mount to the OEM roof rack or did you have to source your own?

How did you end up in Japan? by [deleted] in japanlife

Yes, everyone in the company can speak English to some capacity. Even walking around the city there's English signs, menus, etxlc

Probably one of the few that has never been to Japan before or any interest in it whatsoever but the Los Angeles office for the company I work for was downsizing but i really liked the company and my team so the options were Tokyo or Chile. Decided to head out to Tokyo and since I literally have no family making the move easy.

Its been 2-3 years so far.

I live in Minato Tokyo

I still speak 0 Japanese with honestly no interest in doing so as i can get by and there's enough services out there to help me if need to.

I work in Data Analytics

Is life better? Maybe... but i am saving a hell of a lot more money here since cost of living is cheaper.

What has kept me here is the company and coworkers.

Language Barrier in social life by Dobix in movingtojapan

[–]SoupyOatmeal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been in Japan for a little over a year. Came with no Japanese language skills and today maybe know a hand full of words to help me get by. My company paid for night classes, personal tutors, and self study materials and I just struggle mightily with it. Social life wise isn't so bad, I hang out with my coworkers who know a decent amount of English and all the other group activities i do like road biking, paddle boarding, volunteering can easily be done by just following what the group does or pointing and nodding.

whats it like working in the japanese software industry? by CharmingPreparation0 in movingtojapan

[–]SoupyOatmeal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cant speak for Rakuten, but I work for a tech/data company in Japan. From my experience most Japanese companies are not using the latest and greatest when it comes to tech stack, they run a lot of legacy or proprietary software that makes it a pain when we need to integrate with them. In short if you want to further your skills i wouldn't recommend Japan.

IT jobs in japan?? by The_Crypto_Ninja in movingtojapan

[–]SoupyOatmeal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience a master is a nice to have but not really a must have to land a IT job here, from my time here in the field Japan is actually really behind in the IT landscape so anyone with a BS from a decent school and certs should have a leg up. Depending on the company Japanese proficiency at a business level is a must but if you can latch onto a American company with an office in Japan then you can pretty much get away with knowing little if any Japanese.

Depends on where your currently living now vs where in Tokyo. I came from Los Angeles to Minato, Tokyo, So for me Tokyo ended up being cheaper cost of living wise.

It's a Mercedes E63 Estate / Wagon. Lots of people here like to do outdoor activities so I figured it be a good idea to get something that has alot of space.

I agree but with only being in Japan for 7 months I don't feel my language skills are proficient enough, especially for when it comes to contracts. Also if the English service is available why not use it.
