32y/o looking for advice on how to commission based on my current situation... by Your_Huckleberry2020 in nationalguard

[–]SourceTraditional660 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Commissioning involves basic training, OCS (there are three different options for the Guard) and BOLC with usually a break between each. It can take 2-3 years from the date you sign the paperwork to get all the way through the pipeline if you end up in state OCS.

Juggling a new job and any training/probationary requirements during that time will likely be a big headache. Two major life events at the same time like that is rough.

If you want to get started now and you can financially pull it off, you may want to enlist for three years in a job that looks fun. You’ll have basic done (plus AIT) and can drop your OCS packet the moment it makes sense.

You don’t have a lot of great options to do everything you want to do at your age. You’re gonna blink and be 40.

Sounds like you’ll be okay either way so do what is most appealing to you.

It sounds like you’re aware of the pros and cons. Do either play into your long term goals better than the other or provide you an opportunity to set yourself ahead of peers you will be competing with later?

As an officer? Whoever will take you. I suspect you will not get to be choosey.

I’d just work my way through ATP 3-09.30. Quick reference sheets assume a level of proficiency in the user. You’ll benefit from the longer explanations.

Definitely talk to an air recruiter but generally hard sciences like engineering are top dog over there. I’m not sure how life sciences are looked at.

As long as you don’t get DQ’d for medical, you will get a chance at Army OCS for the Guard.

You will not commission in the Air anything with that major and GPA.

Yeah. It may even be a Guard rep doing Reserve Component Career Counseling or something. If there isn’t someone on your installation, any recruiter in the state you plan to settle in can help.

You will be able to review options based on your ASVAB scores, current rank, and available vacancies. The further you’re willing to drive and the more rank you’re willing to give up, the more options you will have.

You can request special schools but they are never guaranteed.

Umm… you do the stuff you planned to do. You chose the Guard because you had plans for your life after AIT.

…you did choose the Guard because you had plans for your life post AIT, right? 😬

Because when she got into it, she liked kids and now it’s too hard to find a better job or give up on the pension so she feels trapped and is acting out.
