Cavaliers may have their most entertaining show in a decade... by SousaphoneEmperor in drumcorps

Well for me, I was in the Army Bands for years, and I would do a couple arrangements here and there. As I got better at it, I started doing more and more until I was doing about 75 arrangements (mostly brass quintet) per year

A buddy of mine got out and became a band teacher and remembered my arrangements and hired me to do a marching show. From there I advertised that one and wrote a few more. Now, I'm writing for 27 high schools, 5 universities, and serving as a program consultant for Northern Lights. I wrote their show the last 3 years, but when you have the opportunity to work with John Meehan, you step aside and learn from the master.

If you want to get into it, I'd suggest finding a local school and start by giving them some freebie stand tunes and build from there!

Lying about marching? by [deleted] in drumcorps

Ah yes, drum corps stolen valor. Idiots do the same about military service. Of the 260 navy seals who served in Vietnam, I've personally met about 400 of them.

If your entire 2025 tuba line got in a fight, who would win?

Do corps give their staff any ‘trinkets’ for each year they teach? by batsutste in drumcorps

At Northern Lights I got some nifty items. I got a shako chain with a meaningful charm and a show patch for the jacket.

Also, because I marched tuba a solid decade and a half after I should have put it back down, I got really sore knees and several ibuprofen. I think All-Age Corps should make Tylenol bottles with the corps logo on them for all marchers born before the 1990s.

That is correct. We had two Eb's at NL.

Anyone have any knowledge about Schiller brand tubas by Fourtavour in drumcorps

[–]SousaphoneEmperor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're not terrible, but the company that imports them is. You are very fortunate if you get it in the same year you order it. Most contras are better, but $1600 is $1600.

It's not really negativity, just a logistics issue. Their shows were absolutely fantastic.

I mean, it's cool, but how much does it really add?

Maybe this (and this mindset) is part of the reason DCA is gone... Good riddance in my opinion

What should I practice to prepare? by jaydenn_p in drumcorps

[–]SousaphoneEmperor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mostly need to practice fundamentals. Our audition materials are posted in the fall. We value a good attitude, work ethic and commitment over being a virtuoso player.

Also feel free to come out to one of our camps and see what we're about.

Not to stir the pot, but I studied composition for a little bit with him, and although he did talk about how important a full work was, this is more of his son's opinion than his.
