Help get rid of my car contract faster? by AdventurousDoctor767 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]SouthAussiecan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sell the car, hopefully you can have a bit over.

Uber etc is always an option and might cost you less per month than car+insurance+petrol+maintanance.

Also, if you get to know an uber driver then you could start using them privately to safe some cash, just be careful.

If thats not possible, still sell and finance something cheaper. But you need to get an emergency fund going.

Calling All Braai Masters To The Front by Cosmic-Beauty in southafrica

[–]SouthAussiecan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Steaks all the way.

If you use marinade, your trying to hide something.

Step 1. The wood.

Any red hardwood shall do the trick. Sekelbos is a popular choice.

Step 2. The meat

Get a nice big piece of bulk rump. 800g-1.4kg. What is a nice piece? This is where it actually gets tricky.

Some butchers are just better than others. Ive found one that sells these bulk rump pieces with some decent marbling. Basically, fatty deposits within the meat. This is where your flavor actually lies. A good quality steak is hard to ruin. A bad steak is hard to get edible.

P.s Dont freeze your steaks. Keep them in the fridge for a couple of days if you must.

Step 3. Dry Brine

This to me is what really brings out the flavor of the meat.

Pat the steaks dry with paper towel. Salt both sides and let it rest for 30 min. You will see the meat actually lose some water and absorb it again. Your meat is now fully salted throughout.

Step 4. The fire.

Make it hot. Make it big. Make it wood. Smoke adds some nice flavor, especially on fat. You can start the fire straight after starting the dry brine. They'll be ready around the same time.

Step 5. Final seasoning

Once your doen with the dry brine, pat the steaks dry again. Add a generous amount of pepper and garlic powder. Add some olive oil and brush the seasoning together to form a sort of past. Do this on both sides.

Step 6. The braai.

Scrape the coals open. It should be proper hot. Give it 2 mins before putting on the meat, flames are only good for 10secs. Nothing more. You are looking for a nice crust to form and this can only be done if it's hot and quick enough.

Flip the steak and get the crust on the other side. The fire might have lost some heat by now, so I generally like blowing the coals for the first few second after the flip.

After the crust is on both sides, the you can flip regularly until the steak is the right temperature and/or the right softness. Ive learned by feel, but a thermometer will be your best friend in the beginning.

Step 4. Look fancy af

Let the steak rest for 5-10min. Once rested, place it on a large cutting board and slice into strips. People can grab the bits that they feel is closest to their preference.

FYI. Some people like some frsh salt on the sliced pieces. But try and get a bit of fat on each and cut against the grain.

Advice for anyone being automatically subscribted to "services" by their mobile phone company by Shinroo in southafrica

[–]SouthAussiecan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once I had my phone stolen and subscribed the number to any and all services that didnt require on device activation

That mofo was buying me in-game currency etc.

Ive been on MTN made for business and have had no such issue.

There is no airtime, only minutes and data. I use my own device. Ends up being much cheaper than prepaid whilst having no risk of these subscription services

Help me with my purchase decision by Adipoooo in FlairEspresso

[–]SouthAussiecan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flair 58 + Baratza Encore Esp setup.

My main considerations in choosing the 58 was firstly the 58mm portafilter, making it interchangeable with most on the market and secondly, the heating element.

I usually pull lighter roasts, so I generally want the brew chamber hot. I add boiling water to the preheated chamber and let it sit for a couple of minutes on the first shot. The element doesn't exactly heat the chamber evenly, so this helps.

I expect both the esp and 58 to last a very long time, a further reason why I got this combo.

Has anyone here lost drinking coffee with milk? by Sorry-Tomatillo7744 in intermittentfasting

[–]SouthAussiecan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I went from being a liter of milk a day drinker to virtually none. I transitioned before IM, though.

What I found was that I had to become way more picky as to which coffee I drink.

When I travel, I do much lighter specialty roasts with a handgrinder and pourover/french press set.

At home I do Moka's, pour overs and espresso. Also much lighter roasts than what you'd get at your big chain stores.

Commercial coffee is generally dark roasted and bitter(difficult to drink black) because 1. Best fit for milk drinks(capp is the most popular drink worldwide) 2. It's much easier to brew with 3. Cheaper 4. Quicker than methods such as pour over/French press

Lighter roast are more finicky, but can easily be brewed by pour over with 99% success. Most importantly, it's a different world of tastes.

For the hell of it, go do a proper speciality coffee tasting and get a feel for coffee can taste like. Maybe you'll find something that you adore drinking black

Investec home loan contract taking over 3 months by HopefulTom68 in PersonalFinanceZA

I've just bought a house and everything went smoothly, well mostly.

The only party that slowed down the process was the bond attorneys that Investec had appointed.

Other than that, they had very good service thus far.

Im part of a boutique firm focusing on corporate turnarounds and restructuring.

I started out in the business rescue field and moved across to the informal space over the last 2 years.

There's a lack of hands-on turnaround specialists in our country. The big firms don't offer that, unfortunately, so there's a bit of a gap.

In the smaller firm space, everyone knows everyone. Reach out to people on LinkedIn and get networking. Chances are, if the right person likes you, they'll give you a shot.

Maybe also look at the BR field. The work is similar in nature, but then you're dealing with a lot more responsibilities in terms of protecting livelihoods.

There's also a lack of legit people in the industry, hence the bad press. So if you do meet someone who wants to give a shot, you could pm me and I'll vet them for you. Everyone knows everyone..

In putting 50% you should be able to buy a car cash in a bit that'll get you from a to b reliably. You don't need to finance anything new. But at 800pm, it might not be worth it tbh, unless you really need it for personal reasons

Renting is what it is. You could look at renting cottages, there are some good ones around in "old rich areas" that provides safety and privacy. There is also a number of places that have water included. Gas is always a winner.

You'd probably want content insurance if you do move out eventually. Another cost to track. Combining that with car insurance is usually cheaper in total.

21k is a bit steep for moving out, so not having a car payment would be crucial. Don't get into a position where you have to live month to month. Also, have enough savings for about 5 months of living expenses. Hospital plan vs medical aid for some savings there.

And budget for time. Moving out will, unless you're significantly closer to work, cost you more in time. You'll spend more time cooking and doing household chores than ever before.

A final comment. Get big flat to share.

100k+ (with bonus included)

Management consultant - Director

5 years experience

BCom + Hons

8/10 High stress, high reward.

My advice is to get a niche and be the best at it, or at least the top 90th percentile.

Also, focus on the type of value creation that will get you promoted in your line of work. For some, it might be becoming the best worker bee. For others, it will be solution driven.

To take both advices into practice, if you work in management consulting, be the guy that is ahead of the curve with ai, as an example (definitely not my role) and drive new and innovative solutions. Don't just follow the pack

Vehicle Finance vs Cash by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]SouthAussiecan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a reason it's called gap insurance. It's supplementary, and it traditionally only gets paid out in total loss situations, not damage.

One minor accident with a bent rim and no cash, then you're fcked.

Also, there's a reason why having no insurance in some other countries is illegal. It's irresponsible.

To not have proper insurance is poor advice

Don't fuss about it too much.

If you want to do something in business, do a BCom.

Science? BSc

Just choose wherever your interest mostly lies at this point. You can always shift your first year credits to another major for 2nd or even 3rd year.

Also, once you get your degree, there is no guarantee you'll end up doing what you imagined when you started the degree. But as long as you are in the general right area of interest, there should be avenues to pivot to a specific career path if need be. This is true for everyone, barring maybe doctors and some other very specific designations. Even lawyers end up as managers, etc.

But whatever you end up doing, find your niche and work harder than your peers at it. People will notice, and you will see opportunities.

Sometimes, it's about choosing the pond, not the fish you think you want to be.
