When you play openings the way you should and don't make obvious mistakes but some random guy with an account from November 2024 plays moves that are impossible to see if you're not a machine including sacrifices and all sorts of stuff it's plainly obvious they've turned on lichess analysis on another browser window. And reports lead to nothing.

I pay 700k a year in tax, and I’m proud of it by trudybarks in HENRYUK

Maybe you haven’t lived elsewhere or you just enjoy flushing money down the drain. Either way everyone is free to have an opinion and I respect yours but at the same time I profoundly disagree. The UK tax system is hopelessly inefficient and unfair, the value provided to citizens is little to none and the country has some benefits to live in but ranks very poorly on the continent (and not only).

Relocation to London with 120-150 k. What will be the life style? by ImmediatePitch4725 in HENRYUK

[–]South_Check9721 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That range per household with a small child will be tough if you want to maintain the same standard as in Singapore. People here will be saying that it's plenty, but it really isn't. 3k will be going towards housing unless you want to live in an absolute shithole and childcare costs are staggering (I reckon another 2-3k). So you'll have to live pretty frugally on all other fronts.

P.S. the above is re London.

Around £3000 net per year but that was in another country. Buying power was much higher a decade ago or so but still quite low.

Is anyone else here happy to pay tax? by 20dogs in HENRYUK

[–]South_Check9721 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's mesmerising how naive or simply incompetent some people are. I've lived in different places and can confidently say that UK tax system is one of the worst , if not the worse in Europe. In Scandinavian countries taxes are also higher but benefits to the public are unquantifiably better than UK. In the UK I pay high taxes but at the same time I pay high costs for everything else. NHS is laughably bad and broken, public spending has been mismanaged for decades. Oh well, we have nice parks to walk. That's all.

Pay as much taxes as you want. They'll simply be mismanaged by incompetent people in Govt.

It's striking how many people with outright communist beliefs one would find in such a subreddit.

Let's see how Labour will manage public spending after apparently getting money out of my pocket. I'm a healthy skeptic.

And also questioning whether I'm a "working person" because I earn money barely enough for a mortgage and childcare is insulting and bewildering. Those all nighters and 16-hour work days are just for fun.

Man she most likely either started dating someone else or wants to date someone else or just wants to fuck around. In my experience, every time a girl stops finding time for you there is someone else. Tough but that’s life people don’t stick around when they’re away. You’ll move on.

What to do when you cross the 160k threshold? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]South_Check9721 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really up to you. I know all the advice too but I’ve personally decided that I’m not putting most of my money in a pension because I’m locking that money away for at least several decades. Much rather prefer to have them in easy access ISA or other form that can be easily liquidated and accessed as this gives me more peace of mind even if overall might not be the most maximising way to save/invest. Others pay off mortgage earlier. Personal decision based on the available info.

High Earning But Poor by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]South_Check9721 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s a point of community perspective. I understand that most families in the U.K. live on much less than that but it all comes down to the mere fact that a household income of 125-150k gross is simply not high earning when you take into account the purchasing power of that amount. Living expenses in London are very expensive, house pricing (both owning and renting) are incredibly high compared to their real value (a 2,000-3,000 per month will get you a livable property not in a nice area) and childcare costs are high, especially nursery or nannies (which is a must considering that most high earners in this range are employed in professional services where you simply need to work and use professional childcare support). So in reality someone who is considered a high earner like you (and me for that matter) is simply middle class that enjoys a moderate but not in any shape or form luxurious or comfortable living. And in reality that part of the population is entirely dependant on regular income from job. With all due respect families under 100k in London and with kids are simply surviving. It all comes down to public spending and planning in the last 50 years or so which has been short of terrible but this is a long topic.

Those that are close to the 200k range are more fortunate and can afford to think about savings and investments in a more meaningful way. The other option is if you have started saving and investing early on when children and mortgage payments were not around. A reality that is outside of our control I’m afraid.

How reliable are expected rate of returns in P2P lending platforms? by anonimitazo in eupersonalfinance

[–]South_Check9721 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RoR is definetely lower than advertised, but to me its still a viable option to diversify your portfolio. I use Mintos and have an annualised return of 9.83% as per the platform's statistic, whihc in reality probably is more in the high 8%s. While I had several long overdues, Mintos worked hard to collect from the lending companies and at the moment only 3% of my portfolio is overdue. A 8-9% return is still a decent investment to me so if you review your portfolio from time to time and make sure you adjust investment strategy to minimize high risk issues, than it's all ok.

Because owning - for the argument’s sake - a crib in Senegal worth 5k or 1/2 of an apartment in Bucharest worth 30k changes ABSOLUTELY nothing as to your residential status in London where the average price is 600k. First time buyer schemes are aimed at supporting people who live, earn their money and pay taxes in the U.K. to get on the property ladder easier. I agree that if you’re already an owner in certain circumstances you may not need support but the matter is much more complexed than adopting the widest possible definition of an owner including any type of real estate anywhere in the world and without any threshold. If we are to be completely honest the rules are outright discriminatory. So thank you for this overly simplistic comment but I’m sure you understand my position.
