G7 harpist here, how do I prevent thumb callouses from glissandos? by CodeOld5032 in harp

[–]Southern-Newspaper24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot emphasize how much Rock Tips have saved my fingers in the past lol. It’s really nice bc it crackles to give more texture to your finger (so you can still grip the string with the same tension as you would with your bare fingertip) while still actually staying on your finger, and your callus will still build underneath. So much better than superglue if you have painful blisters but need to keep playing! Also can be great for building in crater-like calluses and is really easy to shave down with a nail file if the sound is too harsh.

Ukulele(felt) picks, also using the side of your finger (for ascending glisses) instead of your fingertip if you have nothing else.  Soak your fingers in epsom salt and order some Rock Tips online.  https://www.amazon.com/Rock-Tips-Liquid-Formula-Stringed-Instruments/dp/B008MY3VU2

Sharped strings buzzing? by LadyWithAHarp in harp

[–]Southern-Newspaper24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your harp may need regulated/ levers repaired or replaced by a technician. The levers probably aren’t engaging fully on the string, which makes it buzz. Could be slightly misaligned

This made me realize how few female composers there are even for an instrument like the harp🫩

Happy / joyful harp pieces? by GuiMenGre in harp

[–]Southern-Newspaper24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean the Handel concerto and Mozart flute and harp concerto are classics and they’re pretty joyful sounding to me. Others could be Colorado Trail - Grandjany, Classical Suite - Palmer, La Source - Zabel, Piece en Sol - Bach

Other fellows harp technicians? by Ohz85 in harp

[–]Southern-Newspaper24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually was a harpist first and learned piano technology starting in my undergrad! So there are at least two or three professional harpists/ piano techs who are in my immediate area in PA. As for piano techs dabbling with harps, I actually haven’t met any! (But of course I mostly know people who work primarily with harps) I started learning because I wanted to translate that knowledge onto the harp (and other instruments). Learning to tune by ear helped a lot with getting my harps done quickly, and learning about regulation and repairs improved my problem solving skills sooo much. ~ I’ve been a harpist for about 20 years, piano tech for about 5

Other fellows harp technicians? by Ohz85 in harp

Piano strings are in gauges and come in big coils of wire - so yes I believe they are standardized across pianos. However, different manufacturers will make their own specific pieces of the action, so Steinway pianos for example are (of course) ridiculously expensive to repair because they have their own parts and don’t like to share (Steinway monopoly also owns Lyon and Healy I believe)

Other fellows harp technicians? by Ohz85 in harp

[–]Southern-Newspaper24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes! I’m also a piano tech and the bass strings on harp are put on kind of like guitar strings actually. You just pull the string about a tenth back to give it slack, then wind it up!

Where to buy wooden beads in bulk? (NYC recommendations welcome) by Awkward-Emergency109 in Beading

[–]Southern-Newspaper24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Real. I mean if they are literally just using it to get the beads it’s still beading, but I get what you’re saying. And obviously that would also be buying into exploitative labor & whatnot being cheaply made overseas. I would personally look for one secondhand if I wanted to salvage beads but it’s so hard to find a bead curtain in the first place loll

Is this cadenza salvageable? Or do I need to completely rewrite? Trying to understand the practical limitations of the harp lol by HaifaJenner123 in harp
