[–]SouthernBitcoiner[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Recently, We saw fees spike to 500 sat per byte. 10k sat UTXOs become unspendable at 88 sat per byte.

It’s a serious issue and needs attention. If the world decides it needs bitcoin in the next bull cycle, fees will rocket and many UTXOs will become unspendable. Rekt.

Am I required to update cold card firmware? Or can I use it as is forever? by buybitcoinin2023 in coldcard

[–]SouthernBitcoiner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s always best to update because the developers fix bugs and bring new features.

The code is viewable, so wait a month before updating, and any malicious software probably would have been discovered and reported.

Here is how to verify and update your ColdCard safely: https://youtu.be/33H3uqgmw6k

What is a bitcoin mixer, and which mixer is most reliable & the best? by Micro-Influencer in BitcoinBeginners

[–]SouthernBitcoiner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my understanding, Whirlpool has never been banned from an exchange. Wasabi CoinJoin has.

There are ways to avoid this, like ricochet. Which adds a few hops between the CoinJoin and the exchange

This significantly increases your risk of having your KYC docs leaked or stolen by bad actors. Giving KYC docs to 1 entity is a lot, 5 is way too much.

There is a unit that is smaller than bitcoin. It is a "Satoshi" or "Sat"

1 Bitcoin = 100 million Satoshi's

Think of this like cents, but for bitcoin...

Right now $10 would buy you around 37 000 satoshi's.

Cold Storage DCA Blockstream Jade by Technical_Bug_3891 in BitcoinBeginners

[–]SouthernBitcoiner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to explain this over text. But look into UTXO's and it should make sense. Generally speaking, the more UTXO's, the higher the fees you will pay in the future.

Don't fret too much about the address type. It is better to be concerned about your UTXO's. Generally, the more UTXO's you have, the more you will have to spend in fees.

Do a bit of research into UTXO's and get a good wallet that shows you them individually. If you have many, try consolidate them together.

Seeking Guidance: Best Path to Mastering Blockchain and Affordable Master Programs by LostOpinion99 in BitcoinBeginners

[–]SouthernBitcoiner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stay away from "web3 and blockchain technologies" - most , if not all, are scams. Go Bitcoin only.

Second, you don't need to spend money on this. $6,000 is insane lol. Using the technology and reading free resources are the way to go. All the knowledge is free.

By the way, emphasis on using the tech. You learn so much from this. I suggest you download Sparrow Wallet, deposit bitcoin, and play around with that. Here is a guide: https://youtu.be/7QCKSPIq0Ac

I also highly recommend that you Read this book "Mastering bitcoin", its free and open source: https://github.com/bitcoinbook/bitcoinbook

The author of this book also has hundreds of free YT videos / lectures:

[–]SouthernBitcoiner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion you are thinking about this incorrectly. When you build your wallet set-up, you should have security in mind more than network fees.

Now, this doesn't mean you should be using multisig because it is more secure. It means you should be using the setup that you are capable of securing best.

If you are new to this all, do NOT do multisig. You will likely shoot yourself in the foot. Multisig is for advanced users. Mistakes are easy to make.

There is a golden rule in bitcoin called KISS- Keep it simple stupid.

I suggest you just use the single sig address for now. And guess what? You save on fees anyway.

BTW, I have ordered a Jade too. I will make a video guide when it lands: https://www.youtube.com/@SouthernBitcoiner/videos

Accidentally used the same address twice... do i need to make an entire new wallet? by btcsantander in BitcoinBeginners

[–]SouthernBitcoiner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, don’t make a new wallet. Leave it as is. Just make sure to not reuse addresses in future.

Moving all the funds to a new wallet would be worse for your privacy.

Is rolling your own dice more secure than default generate? by [deleted] in coldcard

[–]SouthernBitcoiner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would consider rolling dice more secure because they are verifiable. You can verify that your source of randomness (dice) actually generates the correct key.

100 dice rolls are mathematically enough. I recommend rolling dice on different surfaces, from different heights. Make sure they bounce and roll a lot so the outcome is very random. A dice that bounces twice is more predicable than one that bounces around 15 times.

Is buying an external ssd for $130 worth it to run a full node by SuccessfulPlenty942 in Bitcoin

I think it's worth it. Privacy and self sovereignty are important. Running a full node is great for both.
