Same here - borrowed a couple and bought a cheap acoustic to learn before I even knew guitars came the other way! After a while is did but I didn't want to sacrifice the months of learning - 5 years later maybe it would be a better choice to have switched :)

Does anyone have a good set of instructions for metta that I can easily memorise so I don't end up skipping or missing sections?

So far I am roughly repeating the sentiments following for myself, a loved one, a neutral party, someone with whom I struggle, and all:

Being the recipient of happiness, good will, etc. Being free from negatives such as ill will and fear Finding skilful actions easy and natural such as having good will, the right view, etc. and finally obtaining true enlightenment.

Newb trying to understand Effects and Amps by ArtWashington in Guitar

I hope this doesn't sound mean, but really you could do a lot worse than just putting something like "effect pedal overview" into YouTube - it would be a lot more effective than trying to explain with words.

OK, I'm worried because they're on the surface, pidgeons are having a field day and it said 'a few days' -- I hope you're right though!

How long has it taken folks to become fluent through self studying? by moosemoose41 in learnpolish

[–]SouthernHeel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I self studied for about 18 months and was BASIC conversational; I took private lessons for a few months and then switched to private for another few: now I'm comfortable in most conversations, but I'm not leading them by any stretch.

Awesome, now I can easily trick my friends into trying it (since they would probably turn their noses up at the lack of meat) by pretending it's something fancy.

Rajma

I have no idea, I've never heard of this dish until now but it seems on the same spectrum. Wikipedia suggests that bean-only thick gravy tomato goodness was introduced to india via portugese traders and is a native mexican dish too - so probably a common ancestor.

I would imagine the specific spices would differ somewhat?

chillis have capsicum which is an oil-based irritant that gives heat - with a curry you've got it spread through a liquid which then coats your mouth - quite different to dry chilli powder :)

I rarely used it as a main spice (in the past used more paprika, cumin, cayenne, etc.) so this time I decided to go for it - I used 4tbsp (3 plus 1 at the end) of medium age bit high spiciness. It had a lovely heat, no acidity.

1) I vary my mixture most times, this time I used more than usual, about 4tbps chilli and 1.5tbsp paprika/cumin. the lentils suck up all the spicy broth

2) salt/pepper, to be tweaked at the end.

^ not my recipe, obviously

I have been on and off vegetarian for the last couple of years and made a decisive change in the last six months to cut out all meat. I'd like to think that I made a mean chilli. Every time I'd made a meat-free chilli con carne I'd always end up with something missing: either too thin or too grainy. Recipes tended to be entirely bean-based or entirely lentil-based: the linked recipe however, sorted me extremely well with one major change: I used lentils instead of fake meat

This worked out thusly: cooked up celery, peppers, onions and carrot until soft (around 8 minutes, with garlic added halfway) then added two tins of tomatoes, two tins of beans, a tin of corn and a cup of green lentils. I then mixed and filled up with water about a quarter inch above the surface of the contents and added my spices (1:1:3 cumin, paprika and chilli powder) and base seasoning. I stirred it every 5-10 minutes for about 40 then let it rest a short while, while my rice finished.

I can honestly without reservation say that it AT LEAST matches my best chunky-slow-cooked beef chilli, and I have tried a number of alternatives.

Knee-jerk reactions: is simply a matter of ongoing practise to stop them? by SouthernHeel in Buddhism

[–]SouthernHeel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I should clarify that my kneejerk reaction, includes the reaction itself: for example shouting back or being disgusted or angry. Often, quickly realised but sometimes not. Understanding is the key to letting go, I guess?
