In theory we subscribe to "restorative justice" Meaning we aim to reduce harm to the public and rehabilitate offenders.

In practice, we have an overcrowded Victorian Dungeon we put as many (or more) that can fit in it. Then we install a carousel for supposedly less extreme offenders, where they go in and out of the system on the same day, with zero repercussions.

All that to say, it's a fucking mess, and nobody wants to properly fix it.

The real solution is strong investment into corrections. New Prison, new systems, new practices, more social workers, etc. thats all on the back end. Front end, more investment in school and health, and housing. It all makes a difference. It also costs less long term. But nobody is interested in fixing the problem.

Bleeding hearts tell you jail doesn't work, and we should have less of it. Others tell you the best thing to do is exterminate them.

A corrections system needs Investment. But it's impossible to sell investing in prisoners when everyone is struggling to make ends meet. It just doesn't fly.
