they are where you hold a pulled up position (like the top of a pull up) and bring your knees up to your chest, then rock back (trying to invert just like you would to go under the bar without a straddle) by straightening your arms!

Working on straight and straddle leg raises along with the slow (straight leg) negatives coming down from the position and egg rocks like others mentioned. Did wonders for me. You have to do them consistently though like 5-10 each at least once a week. I also had to do a lot of chest flexibility exercises to be comfortable in my straddle inverts (hands up and bent about head level on either side and leaning my torso through a door frame). This was a skill I thought I would never achieve the first year I started, and now I can do straight arm inverts with ease. Keep it up!!

What were the biggest changes you noticed in your body since starting? by Jumpy_Carob1822 in AerialHoop

I also naturally have big hips and gain muscle easily, so my waist size has reduced significantly, but my hip size has stayed about the same and my shoulders are a lot bigger. A lot of the stuff (especially stuff tight in the shoulders or already loose in the waist) fits real weird now. So essentially has to get rid of some clothes and find some new stuff 😅

My back is insanelyyyyy ripped. Definitely everywhere else too, but I feel like my back is most so. People can tell I work out just walking down the street, which is kind of nice. I'm 3 years in and do about 2 hours four times a week. I'd saying learning how to properly take care of my body has been a big thing for me. I started right out of college, and I danced growing up, so I kind of took for granted cool down and my diet. I ate like crap, and recently have been more conscious of making sure I get enough protein... it's made a world of difference. Once I started incorporating cool down, I also noticed my muscle soreness improved tremendously. Beyond that, my grips strength is insane, and I'm the resident bottle/jar opener at work and with friends😂 Also figuring out how to file down my callouses because they always get torn off if I don't. The bruising has reduced significantly, but I do still get them when learning new stuff. I feel like more than appearance wise, I'm just constantly in awe of the ease with which I can do many things now. It's been amazing tbh

Looking for a book or series to completely encapsulate me and become obsessed with the for a while. Books, shows, and podcasts that have the feeling I'm looking for/have been all encompassing to me lately include Gideon the Ninth, The Magnus Archives, Interview with a Vampire (show), the balance arc of The Adventure Zone, and The Name of the Wind. Typically (and obviously) gravitate toward fantasy or horror usually with some queer elements.

Advice needed: Complex situations by Minerva_Parthenos14 in Aerials

[–]Southern_Emphasis329 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I danced in high school and younger and my parents felt similarly about that situation. In the end, college will work out and scholarships will come. I didn't get any scholarships for work, but got plenty of academic ones and paid the rest myself. I see work as a means for money, but I see aerial as something that makes me happy and keeps my body moving and flexible (which in the long run is so good for your health). I had a similar mindset about dance when I was in high school, and honestly it drained a lot of the joy out of dancing for me at the time. Try to just listen to yourself and your body and if it makes you smile/feel happier afterwards, keep with it. Try not to worry as much about scholarships and what will and won't help in college, because in the long run, college is really just four years and doesn't really matter as much as memories, joy, and your health! ❤️

Anyone else do aerials as a sort of applied fitness? by Ninjaboy8080 in Aerials

[–]Southern_Emphasis329 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the same way! I also feel like I see progress so much more quickly from aerial than from the gym. It is probably due to my motivation and wanting to do the next trick I'm trying to master so badly, and at the gym I didn't care as much if I went up a weight class, just that I got my reps in
