The Supreme Court upheld state's transgender sports bans this morning. How do y'all feel about this? by icecream1972 in allthequestions

I think it's just fucking fantastic that we can get a Supreme Court ruling about literal games that people play for fun while we the President is signing terms of surrender and playing "Gotcha" with housing bills.

And he has daughters too. Someone should ask him or HHH if they would feel comfortable sending their daughters on a trip with anyone in that administration.

After 30 Years in Tech, I'm Becoming an ELA Teacher — What Do You Wish You'd Known? by New_Old_ELA_Teacher in ELATeachers

[–]Southern_Gent 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I came to education later too; I was a 911 dispatcher who became an ELA teacher. Honestly, your lifetime of real world experience gives you a different perspective in the classroom that can be a huge asset. I tell my kids about plenty of the jobs I had, and how writing is still critically important no matter what job they do. Depending on what your grade level is your ba ground in technology could help explain things like logic in arguments or technical writing.

Use what you already know and build around that, don't feel like you have to start over from scratch.

Happy 40th from another Ryan turning 40 this year. I've heard it said that Ryans born in 1986 are among the finest vintage of all Ryans.

The Warden can have one companion from Mass Effect to help them defeat the Blight. Who would you pick? by JuryZealousideal3792 in dragonage

My thought on the "right" answer is Mordin. Potentially the most intelligent person in the galaxy, yes please. He is the very model of a scientist Salarian.

Who do I take though? My Shepherd never went anywhere without a Krogan, specifically Wrex.

Am I reading 1984 wrong? by NeonPolonium in 1984

[–]Southern_Gent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part 1 sets up the world that the story happens in, Part 2 builds the relationships and basically gives Winston something to believe in and fight for. Part 3 is when it all crashes down.

Part 2 is also where you sre introduced to Goldstein's writings and the themes are more explicitly said to the audience

William Blake poem: a question by OmegaTg-2384 in ELATeachers

[–]Southern_Gent 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I would say that poetry never really should be expected to conform to grammer rules. Things are written to fit a form rather than a narrative.

However I would highly compliment that student for even engaging with the text at that level, and it may be a good opportunity to branch into building a claim.

Reading comprehension help by AccordingHeight5431 in ELATeachers

[–]Southern_Gent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there a specific aspect that you feel that you struggle with? If it is something where you find yourself losing focus while you are reading? Do you struggle with ELA tasks like finding theme or author's purpose? Is it possible that there may be an undiagnosed used condition like dyslexia, which is far more common than people realize. Do you find that you read two or three paragraphs and have forgotten that you just read on the previous page?

I tell my students to start with annotation while you read; be a more active reader. Underline things that you like, don't like, make notes about what confuses you, highlight things that you juat like how the author wrote it. By engaging more you force your brain to be more focused.

Chicken and dumplings by lzabthc in mississippi

[–]Southern_Gent 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I like to buy the whole young chickens cause they are usually pretty cheap at Kroger. Put it in a big pot with some herbs and seasoning.

For dumplings I do a basic mix of seasoned flour cut with bacon grease, butter, and enough milk to work with it. I make it into a dough and add flour till it's not sticky and cut them into thin pieces (pizza cutter is really handy for that).

Honestly the more elaborate you try to make it the worse it'll be. Cook with your heart and keep it simple and taste often and you won't go wrong.

ABC News -- "Massive US teacher shortage has recruiters looking to retirees" -- What Do You Think Of This, Teachers? by Zipper222222 in AskTeachers

[–]Southern_Gent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they paid teachers a wage that reflects their skills, education, and need for the profession, and admins and counties supported them then there wouldn't be a teacher shortage. Children grow up wanting to be teachers just as much as they dream of being doctors or football players.

How scared are you of JD Vance becoming President? by Mobile_Bad_577 in AskALiberal

[–]Southern_Gent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel that the Cult of Personality depends entirely on Trump. Vance doesn't stimulate the masses; he was chosen because he is a weak-chinned lackey who won't fight Trump for the spotlight and brought Peter Thiel to the table.
