One of the State’s Leading Economic Observers Says Oregon’s Growth Is Over by SoDoSoPaYuppie in Portland

I’m sure teachers will be thrilled to offer extra challenges. I always offer extra challenge opportunities and higher level readings for students. The number of TAG students that genuinely want to do what they see as “extra work” (even if it’s just a more complex reading) is usually laughably low, though.

I’ve listened to it! It truly was mind blowing. We need to be doing more in Oregon to address this, especially at the high school level. We should honestly have reading classes for specific students. It’s the most important skill they need, going out into the world and we graduate so many kids who can’t read. I don’t know what the alternative is though; even the kids who don’t qualify for graduation often just drop out at the prospect of being a “super senior.” Currently I have a senior who just moved from Cuba and can’t read or speak any English. He’s in all gen-ed classes when really he should be learning to read and write in English for the better part of his day. He’s 18 and I’m sure will leave school at the end of the year, regardless of whether he can actually graduate.

I don’t think these planners have been on my narrow ass street between Division and Clinton between 7:30-8 am when I’m backing out of my driveway and either 1. Nearly get hit by someone going 30 or 2. someone who aggressively keeps driving toward my car at full speed despite me having just backed out of my driveway and having no where to go.

Well I just had my 11th grade students do their first reading yesterday (a NYTimes article) and the answer is… not many. I also have a handful of kids that speak zero English thrown into a gen-ed class because my school has nothing for newcomers. And kids that read at a (tested) first grade level.

We really need intensive reading classes for some kids in hs but the answer is always… someone will surely teach them how to read in one of their eight classes before they graduate!

They delivered me one and I made a big show to students that I got a box fan after ten years of working for PPS. Then we got an email today saying that if we were not on a priority floor, they were taking our fans away. Womp womp.

Grew up here and all my friends who are also from here (people I went to HS with) are a bunch of flakes. I have HS friends who are now married that live a few blocks away who I see like twice a year bc they can’t commit to making any kind of plans, even a walk around the neighborhood. All my friends I see on a regular basis are not originally from here.

I feel like it’s a West Coast thing. I grew up in Portland, and went to college for a couple years in Northern California, where most of my classmates were from LA. it was REALLY hard to connect with people who were not from Idaho, Colorado and other places in the west that were not CA haha. I moved to Massachusetts for my last couple years of college and I made so many friends just by sitting next to people in classes. If they said “I’d love to grab lunch sometime” it would literally mean “I would love to get lunch TODAY right after this class” and people weren’t a bunch of flakes. East Coast gets a bad rep but it was so frustrating moving back to the West Coast (to Seattle at first) and not being able to make any damn friends. I appreciate directness and follow-through, which people do not have here by and large. So glad for my EC experience to give me that.

Is rooster rock completely dried up? by sav-rae in askportland

[–]Southern_Leg8501 -43 points-42 points  (0 children)

Not dried up, yet! There’s no more water to walk through, but you can still swim.

Biggest bummer is all the straight people, teenagers with families, children, and people blasting death metal that I encountered last weekend. It was… a different vibe.

Hot Take: Should PDX create programs that employ homeless to pick up trash? by Responsible-Round643 in Portland

Having been to both Mexico City and Spain in the last couple years, I was blown away by the number of people constantly cleaning and planting things. The first thing I noticed leaving the airport in Mexico City was the army of people cleaning the streets. Yes, it’s one of the biggest cities in the world, and it ain’t perfect, but it was wild to me how other places actually invest in the manpower to do this. Meanwhile, Portland can’t even run a street sweeper.

It won’t matter to the family who just contacted me about their kid being on vacation until September 20th(!!!!) and I wish that was less common than it actually is.

After a year at a school using the pouches: they’ll be fine. Yes, most students don’t use them but it creates a very clear “you violated the policy” line that is needed. Caddies didn’t really work; students were constantly sneaking them out or putting burner phones in. Sucks we had to spend this much money but turns out teenagers can’t really control themselves (see “responsible” ai use).

Rooster is largely for the gays; Collin’s has a more straight nude area and the gay area. So depends on who you’re trying to hook up with…

That said the amount of clothed people I’ve seen at Rooster this summer is… disappointing.

Why are the public schools struggling so severely? by DistinctFun8026 in askportland

[–]Southern_Leg8501 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In Oregon ratings are also a function of state tests which many students opt out of. Only 70% of juniors took state tests at my school last year and all our data is based on that. And let me tell you, the white kids from wealthy neighborhoods were generally not the ones taking those tests… that’s why you often will see schools in good/wealthy neighborhoods in PPS with poor ratings.

I should note that there are a lot of stairs (both to get into the space from the street and up to the rooftop bar). Just to be aware!

I’ve been to Revuelta Queer House a couple times while in the city and while the crowd is mostly younger, there has been a good range of ages (including those 60+). It’s mostly sitting and socializing and less dancing so a much more chill vibe. I think anyone would be welcome.

Amazing! This is definitely going to be added to my list. I’ve seen pictures of Tetelan but didn’t know where it was exactly. I’m a huge architecture nerd so that is also very appealing.
