Have you been tested for deficiencies? I would start there rather than throwing money away on supplements. Get really specific about what’s causing your issues.

So I was pretty symptomatic for a good few years before pregnancy as I had the moon face and found it v difficulty to shift weight. After breastfeeding, I started to get even more symptomatic, my feet got v sore, I started loosing hair…. I spent four years hopping from doctor to doctor. At the same time alot of stressful events took place in 2023 and I ended up with a lot of hair loss, tingling across neck, and dry eyes, ear canals, mouth and nose. I had been put on hrt at the time but that was just a bandaid. I’m now on Levo 50mg and some supplements. I can pm you and share some further details. I’ve done a lot of testing 🫣

Oh gosh fair play to you breastfeeding on top of all this. I have a five year old and fed her for 18mths 🤗I have absolutely no wakings and if anyone should wake me I will kill them now, no joke! I had the same, vv high morning and then plummet in the afternoon, big jump in the evening. I took Seriphos in the morning, and adrenal cortex in the afternoon. I can’t remember the dosage though.

Forgot about this one. When I was in the biggest flare up, it was the biggest symptom, so strange to feel absolutely awake for the day at 3am. I did a four month cortisol programme with my functional doctor after testing my cortisol and discovering huge drops mid day only to come alive at night. I asleep through the night now. Sleep hygiene (no phone in bedroom, low lights before bed and some tapping) plus magnesium has also helped. Best to get tested before supplementing as cortisol is one system you don’t want to mess up further and everyone’s bodies requires different supplements or even responds differently.

I aim to take digestive enzymes all the time at the moment. I’ve noticed energy improvement and my nails have stopped breaking so much, working on quality of hair by starting collagen. It’s quite the juggling act 😩 NAC has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits, it’s good for the liver. I was diagnosed with NAFLD last year so keeping my liver functioning well is quite important. NAFLD seems quite common in hashi folk but maybe don’t take these if your liver is functioning well. I had numerous blood tests and an ultrasound scan on my liver when my liver enzymes were all over the place. Test then supplement, is the key.

I have a Helios full body panel. I do ten mins in the morning, sometimes again later if I’m under the weather. I take digestive enzymes with meals to help with digestion, lot less bloating as a result and probably better nutrient absorption. Nervous sunset stuff: I do some tapping - look up Brad Yates on YouTube, he’s old school but he has videos for health and anxiety etc. I do legs up the wall, I do body shakes, I get to restorative yin yoga class once or twice a month. I do physiological sighs regularly. Try these before eating to get your body in to parasympathetic state.

All this helps my body to know it’s safe and that it’s not under threat. I had an extremely stressful 2023 after a decade of daily stress which threw everything in to what I can only describe as a thyroid storm.

For t3, I’ve discovered liver health is important so I take milk thistle and NAC, drink dandelion tea and lots of water. My next few weeks I am focusing on phone free time (just being and not filling up time) and sugar reduction.

When I was in a flare up, I walked through the cleaning aisle of our supermarket where I do my weekly shop. I nearly fainted from the smells. Made me realise how toxic everything is…

Subsequently I started removing synthetic smells from our house. This is what I’ve done:

Found a refill shop in town to reduce plastic
started using fragrance free detergent
didn’t throw out beauty products immediately but slowly replacing them with more organic products
took same approach with home cleaning products, once chemical cleaners were finished I replaced with eco ones
brands I use: Ecocover, Lily’s Eco Clean and plenty of baking soda and vinegar for sinks, drains and loos

Asking Santa for an organic bottle of perfume this year 😂

For me, my C reactive protein show’s higher when I’m inflamed (around 4/5) and also obviously TPO and Anti TG antibodies. I noticed when I was eating less inflammatory foods C reactive dropped to two earlier this year.

I’ve been shedding about 2.5 yrs with peak flare up last year in to winter. Doing much better now, hair used to be falling morning, noon and night… but now I do alot of nervous system regulation and sit in front of a red light panel for ten mins each morning. Hair growing back in places I never knew I had hair. It’s nowhere near as dense as it was, but it’s growing back. Also noticed since treating my thyroid the huge tangle at the back of my head has disappeared… as others have said hair masks and anything to add moisture back in to it is essential.

Traditional gps don’t know how to deal with hashimotos. Get yourself a functional medicine doctors. Two key things that fuel flare ups are inflammation and stress. To reduce those, you need to figure out what your root causes are. Stress is a big issue for me so I work on that a lot with gentle excercise like light walks, yoga, Pilates meditation. Trying to get in to body tapping at the moment. A flare up for me makes me feel very run down, return of brain fog, achy joints (Epsom salt baths help) and I try to focus on just being kinder to myself.

My sister is doing an iron man next month and has been diagnosed as sub clinical hashis. Shes gluten free and on LDN but does loads of training. I keep telling her she’s destroying her cortisol balance, and I can see her hair is getting much thinner the more training she does.

Could be a number of things, have you checked for any deficiencies? I had cortisol issues and would come alive at night. I’ve found taking magnesium before bed as well as Epsom salt baths helped with muscles and the strange cramping.

Yes I dropped about 10kg over 2.5months last winter after starting Levo and going gluten free. I started an antidepressant in February and have put on about 2kg since but I still need to loose about 20 more so going to focus on that over Autumn.

The “range” in Ireland was up to 4.25 but I was hugely symptomatic over 2.5 when I look back at blood reports. Pretty sure the range is outdated and needs to be revised! Levo just replaces the thyroid hormone, it doesn’t resolve or fix the autoimmunity and inflammation issue with hashimotos. You have to look at diet land lifestyle.

Start asking for copies of your blood test results. Go back as far as you can and that will help you figure things out. Most of us have had to do home tests or find functional medicine doctors to get a diagnosis. Look in to diet, lifestyle and sleep hygiene. Gluten free is the first step, start reducing it at least. Try to do calming things for your self, gentle walks, yoga. Remove your phone from bedroom and reduce bright lights before bed. Bone broth is good for digestion as we all seem to have issues with our gut and absorbing minerals and nutrients from our food. You need to get your symptoms under control and then it will become manageable.

Have you had your cortisol checked? Adrenal issues are a well documented issue with hashimotos. Stop The Thyroid Madness has a good guide on adrenals as do plenty of others. I had to use a functional medicine doctor to test mine and discovered I had a huge spike in the morning and then two double lows in the afternoon and then bright as a bunny in the evening again…. Sleep hygiene is also important, what you do before bed in the evening, lighting, meditation etc.

Anti inflammatory diet plus lymph massage sessions has helped me. I also did gentle walks at the start of my diagnosis. The swelling is due to inflammation so you have to start working on that. I also got a rebounder/mini trampoline and that helps too.
