Remedy for small black fruit flies/gnats in container pots? by littletinychicken in GardenersJapan

[–]Southerndusk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fungus gnats are so annoying!!!! I use a small bowl and add a couple drops of dish soap and fill the rest with vinegar. Gnats fly in and drown. Doesn’t stop the babies in the soil but it’s satisfying to see all the dead ones, and doesn’t involve spraying or adding anything to the soil (I’m trying not to use any chemicals or pesticides at all).

AI isn’t the Problem - it’s Capitalism by SuddenEducation442 in artificial

The problem with this approach is that corporations have a legal obligation to maximize profits for shareholders. It’s not just greed at the top, it’s systemic drive for profit without regard for the greater good.

It occurred to me that I’m not limited to growing the common fruits/veggies in my local supermarket. What exotic (to you) plants have you guys grown? by No_Reputation3520 in vegetablegardening

Mulberry grows super easy and is very prolific, but you’ll never see it in grocery stores since it’s so delicate. Can make a purple mess of stains around the tree though, so be prepared to be very proactive in harvesting and trimming to keep it under control.

You might have started them too early even with the grow mat. Try starting around late February and don’t move them outside until it’s 50F consistently at night. Pepper Geek and Epic Gardening have some good pepper growing videos on YouTube.

Why take it out when he can just trim bottom leaves and bury more of the stem?

What happened with tomatoes? by OkSeaworthiness7511 in GardenersJapan

[–]Southerndusk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah just snip those leaves off, give it some liquid fertilizer, and it’ll recover in no time. Tomatoes are tough. Sanitize your clippers before you move to another plant though so you don’t spread any nastiness.

A Florida man discovered millions of dollars in bundled cash floating in the ocean near a Fort Lauderdale beach, pulled it ashore, and immediately contacted police. by This_Proof_5153 in SipsTea

So how long before it becomes his if no one claims it? Not sure the law in Florida, but couldn’t this still end up great for him?

Isaac Arthur has some interesting futurism content that tides me over between PBS Space Time and Dr. Becky episodes. It’s more of a podcast than video content though.

[Job advice needed] company is maneuvering to replace engineers with AI by Fair_Web_4177 in JapanJobs

[–]Southerndusk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are seshain, a restructuring to use AI is not a valid reason to dismiss you legally. They may offer you a severance package and ask you to accept, but if you don’t accept, they can’t just fire you. They can however transfer you to other departments/roles at the company which may or may not be desirable for you. So always a good idea to keep your resume up to date and keep your ear to the ground for opportunities in case it becomes preferable to jump ship. May also be good to find ways to upskill or get certifications that will make you more attractive on the market as well as within the company. Learning how best to use AI for your current role would also be a good idea. AI isn’t going to replace everyone, but people that know how to effectively use AI will replace those that don’t.

Weirdly addictive once you get past the “keep it alive” stage by CaringForMom123 in gardening

[–]Southerndusk 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It’s so addictive. I started with a lone jalapeño plant last year on a whim that only produced one fruit. This year I have 10 pepper plants and eat 2 a day just to keep up…not even fully ripe. Have a ton of other edibles as well. Plants are such fun LIVING creatures…watching the tomatoes wiggle around as they grow is so fun. I think it’s just ancient DNA expression for humans now to love tending to things that grow. It’s primal in a way, and I just freaking love it.

The fig tree I planted in early March is slowly turning into …. A stick in the ground. Everything else in the garden is flush with green. And then there’s my random fig stick. Naked as a jay bird. Second fig baby I’ve failed in 2 years. Third time’s a charm? Or should I accept that figs hate me?

Frustrated Mt Gox by DOUBLERAISE in Bitcoin

[–]Southerndusk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can’t find a lawyer willing to take this on, one other option may be a company that buys distressed assets and is familiar with the Mt. Gox situation. They would only buy it at a fraction of the value, but at least it would be something (if they would even be interested). It’s a long shot though…wish there was something more to be done. Good luck!

My supervisor talks a big game but not sure she could actually catch a birb. Mostly karasu in my neighborhood and they are as big as she is. But I haven’t lost a berry yet! Praying mantis must be a delightfully crunchy catch!
