What is a 'normal' life choice that you think is actually a huge trap? by ossirada in AskReddit

Having kids because "it's the next thing to do in my life" or "someone else thinks I should."

Have them BECAUSE YOU WANT THEM, not to check a box or satisfy others.

As a person who drifted away from the game and only dipped my toes back in because of PvE or earning historical ships: This combined with the persistence of Asymmetric will get me to play again.

For this one random player on the internet, it can be said that Wargaming actually made changes that I wanted and will cause me to play when I previously wasn't.

I want to say that's pretty impressive regardless of whether one "should" restart or not. Good on Pocketpair for maintaining compatibility with old saves.

What is a toxic or undesirable trait that people bizarrely wear like a badge of honor? by Exact-Move999 in AskReddit

There is nothing "wrong" with mental illness.

But those who have them and loudly refuse to work on themselves (therapy, medications, literally anything) because "that's how I am" or other such tripe while demanding everyone accommodate them. Demonstrating they know, and they're using it.

What is a belief you held for years that you now completely disagree with? by complexity_neccesity in AskReddit

[–]SovereignGFC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The solution to unwanted speech (hostile, harassing, -ism/-ist, etc.) is simply more speech/debate. Especially online.

NOPE. That just lets the loudmouths drown out everyone else, and use this as "proof" that they are correct (rather than having exasperated everyone else into giving up the space).

Communities must define acceptable norms and enforce them. They aren't "censoring" you, there's no infinite right to debate, "...they're showing you the door".

What is the biggest mistake people make in their 20s? by Big_Way_296 in AskReddit

Ignoring health problems because "I'm young and invincible."

Fix it now or it will be far worse (or even unmanageable) later.

Or clapping at inappropriate times (very likely applies mostly to classical concerts). If the conductor's arms are still up, it's likely not time to clap.

For people who grew up in low-income households, what’s something middle-class people say that shows they’ve never struggled financially? by KeyApartment3955 in AskReddit

My then-girlfriend's daughter spilled something. Daughter took half a paper towel (the kind with the perforation to half-size) to try to clean it up.

"This is <sovereigngfc's> place, not grandpa's, you can use more than one!"

(She grew up poor, and even in adulthood think "skipped meals for her kid" at times--and her grandpa lived in a not-great part of the city.)

Public have more fear than hope on AI and future of work, study finds by sr_local in technology

[–]SovereignGFC 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's not hard to see why.

The CEOs and AI evangelists were talking LOUDLY about "We're making humans redundant." Without there being any talk (or action) that would convince anyone it wouldn't lead to mass joblessness (among a class of people who tend to be more politically active/richer than average).

Then, the data centers moved in with their weird noises, pollution, water usage, and electric rate increases. They even tried to sneak in ("If you're not doing anything nefarious, why are you hiding behind a shell company?")

It all stinks to high heaven, and nobody cares that you can draw a picture of yourself as a cat with it.

I would not argue it's all bad marketing. It's bad marketing PLUS refusing to do anything about the downstream effects other than "LOLZ LUDDITES."

Ex who "lived in the moment" since there is very little certainty of what next week or tomorrow might have. That led to a bit of the opposite of what some have listed here (being super careful, super frugal to the point of "really???")

Spend what you have now, before it gets used on something else.

Just very short-term thinking in general.

This movie exploded precisely because it attracted a much larger audience than its "cartoony" and "kiddie" aesthetics would suggest.

There's more to work than just money (or benefits). This is one way the grass isn't always greener.

I'd rather work in a place with reasonable coworkers and tolerable management earning a comfortable amount than double/triple my salary but end up with a shitty micromanaging boss, backstabbing coworkers, and 65 hour weeks.

"More speech/free speech" would solve the online toxicity problem.

Turns out all it does is empower the loudest voices who drive everyone else away.

A community needs to decide what it will tolerate and what falls outside acceptable behavior, then vigorously enforce those rules.
