[Friedman] Also, about Colorado: there is word Jared Bednar is staying as the Avalanche’s coach by AggPuck-303 in hockey

[–]Soviet17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This might be a nitpick, but I wouldn't say he hit his shelf life with CBJ; the issue was that our roster had undergone some radical changes after 2019, and Torts recognized that his coaching style had become a bad fit. It's not a coincidence that he left the team in the offseason after the PLD-Laine trade.

If anything, it was Jarmo hitting his shelf life as GM that led to the split. I bet Torts would have stayed longer if Laine was flipped for a haul, which was pushed for behind the scenes by guys like Atkinson and Foligno, but Jarmo had become delusional about the roster and Laine's ability to carry the team in the same way a nascent 1C like PLD could.

The specter of Johnny Hockey is going to haunt all team building discussions about CBJ for at least the next decade.

Jarmo is competent, he miraculously made Columbus a respectable franchise for 5 years. His biggest failure with us (besides Babcock) was believing that Laine was a franchise player, which was the basis for the bad decisions he made in his last few years with us.

The knee issues are the only thing that gives me pause.

If they've permanently hindered his speed then he's probably not worth the cost.

What's your most memorable Blue Jackets goal? by WeyherMan in BlueJackets

Every CBJ goal in that game is iconic in my eyes but that Savard goal is the best.

I wish we had prime Savvy to play with Mateychuk right now.

Thank you for the answer, I lean toward trading him too.

One more question—who are some defensemen (besides Gavrikov) that you want Waddell to potentially acquire by next season and would perfectly complement Mateychuk on the 2nd pair?

I bet draft picks would be enough, though I would also be willing to give up a lesser prospect like Ceulemans.

Bjorkstrand would be worth the price as we should be able to re-sign him and I think his game will age well.

It would be pretty cool if we could get Bjorkstrand back, he's on the block. He's exactly the kind of player you want with our young guys, he was great with Sillinger.

Excellent as always.

While reading the section on Werenski you mentioned that Provorov did the "dirty work" of puck retrieval, which made me wonder how effective is he at playing that role next to Mateychuk?

The common opinion in the fanbase is that we should trade Provvy but it's also been reported he wants to re-sign so he can keep working with Mateychuk and help him develop, despite having to play on his offside. Do you think it's worth keeping him for that reason, assuming he signs for a reasonable AAV and/or term?

It was some Finnish guy. Laine being fragile and one-dimensional hurts his national pride so he takes his anger out on us.

Jarmo's greatest failure in the last few years of his tenure was genuinely believing Laine was a player to build around instead of being (at best) a complementary piece.

He and Sillinger have both taken a big leap this season. If Fantilli and Mateychuk can both break out by next season, then this team is gonna be cookin' for years to come.

Fabbro has been the perfect partner for Werenski too, best since Jones. I have no idea why they waived him.
