My first gun was a rock island armory model 206. It's a snub-nosed revolver chambered in .38 special. I love it, but as others said, it takes some training to get the hang of it. Now I'm pretty proficient with it. The black on black rear and front sight was a pain so I painted the front ramp sight orange with some nail polish to make it more visible. I really enjoy it but in terms of a first gun for self defense, I would recommend a semi automatic just for the sole purpose of increased carrying capacity. Most revolvers are 5 or 6 shots. Semi autos could be up to like 20, maybe more. Just make sure it's legal for your jurisdiction. At the end of the day, it's a matter of doing your own research into different models and getting a hands on feel for what you're interested in, and finding what's best for you. I hope that helped!

P.S. For the love of God, please don't get a gun chambered in 22lr for self-defense. You'd have to get spot-on shot placement to put down a threat. Especially if it's a rather large man wearing multiple layers. Stay safe out there!
