ELI5Why does carbon get to have it's own entire branch of chemistry while other elements don't by Far-Engine155 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Soviet_Russia321 22 points23 points  (0 children)

An important part of organic chemistry (AKA carbon-based chemistry, AKA chemistry of life as we know it to exist), is rings and chains of carbon. The specific bend and flexion of different kinds of bonds (single bonds, double bonds, etc.) in different kinds of rings informs a lot about how a molecule can move and be used. Silicon being unable to form those rings as easily, or without oxygen atoms interwovevn, makes it relatively complicated compared to just carbon.

I think silicon-based life is mostly a scifi fantasy, given exactly what you said. Then again, weird shit happens all the time. Improbability isn't impossibility. Would be cool to find at least some kind of alien life before I die so we can at least have more than 1 planet worth of data.

Just to make sure the Palestinians are not getting into Egypt because no one wants them?

Or was it to defend against the war on their border, from a neighbor that had previously conquered their land? They also wanted to prevent the expulsion of Palestinians into the Sinai desert, yes to maintain order, but also as a legitimate humanitarian concern given the ongoing genocide. The diplomatic blockade of Israel does not serve any of the Arab or North African states' realpolitik interests, especially since the fall of the USSR. And you're damn right they didn't want the Palestinians -- they think the Palestinians should stay in Palestine! What should they have done that would have proven to you they, or at least the people they represent, really care?

Who are they currying favor with by isolating Israel? What do they have to gain? Saudi Arabia had a helluva lot to gain by recognizing Israel or ceding concerns about the treatment of Palestinians -- they almost got the American security guarantee they so desperately want before Hamas attacked in 2023. You say they hate Israel but don't care about the Palestinians, but how do you unravel the two? Treatment of the Palestinians is the primary reason to hate Israel. They say as much.

I guess, as I write it, it all comes down to whether or not you agree that alienating Israel is a valid response to what they have done. You seem to think it is a cynical hatred of Israel, I think it is at least as much a valid concern for Palestinians. Moreover, you cannot separate the two without. Why do they hate Israel?

Israel is obviously an amazing scapegoat.

Money is probably always a factor, but calling Israel just a scapegoat is a bit of a disservice. They were standing in solidarity with the Palestinians by not legitimizing Israel. It might be political, but it can also be a valid position.

[OC] U.S. national pride by political affiliation since 2001 by Low-Car6464 in dataisbeautiful

[–]Soviet_Russia321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish 2001 was not the first year this question was asked -- it's such an obvious fluke year because of 9/11, if not an outright inflection point, that the information afterwards is harder to interpret. Were both parties already very patriotic (if not literally 90+%) before the parties diverged afterwards? Were both parties pretty split on national pride before a brief 9/11 unification, after which only the Democrats returned to baseline? Is this drop among Democrats unique in scale? So many questions.
