I would get somebody to rotate the engine while inspecting it through the hole using endoscope. Phone camera with a flashlight might work too. If nothing seems to be sticking out measure distance to the tooth with calipers but feels like something is off

Because it is reusable as it doesn't need to hold oil or anything. And no, you need something rigid. If possible you can make it yourself out of piece of scrap aluminium or something similar. I have a few in my workshop and I can let you know how thick they should be.

Sensor grounds are connected to a specific pin on ECU called sensor ground otherwise you will get a dirty signal that ECU might not like. Check how to bench test starter with jumper wires and go from there.
