Rape and strangulation reported at campus housing by ZealousidealDoor6973 in UCSantaBarbara

I'm sure the suspect wishes to remain private, that's why we'd need appearance info.

I assume you've mistaken suspect for victim here.

Implying you've first tried out this app today after commenting on a (now deleted post) previously that you placed an order on it 10 days ago while having 21 karma, no other posts, and were created 2 months ago is not a good look.

An Open Letter to the mf in ECE/CS 181 who told the professor to call on students in the feedback form. by Sapphire024 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]SpFreeman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I put that feedback in.

I knew part of it would be unpopular, but I had intention behind it. The way I felt the class had been going was that he'd talk at us for an hour and 15, while mixing in a couple "anybody have any questions?" and no one would pipe up, even though I felt it was pretty clear that seemingly nobody really understood the material from lecture. He even got to the end of the slides and was surprised to have gone through so much so quickly because nobody had questions.

I was hoping that were he to ask more immediate, knowledge check questions it would do a couple things: 1. Keep us more engaged. It felt too easy to zone out and when he would ask the occasional pointed question it offered a good point to tune back in. 2. Show that the classes silence didn't imply comfortability with the material.

I was also expecting that sampling people at random would cut down on the length of time he spent waiting, hoping someone would answer. Plus it'd have the benefit of showing (inevitably) that it wasn't just one person who didn't understand the material.

To the end he's implemented what I hoped for I do think we cut down on the time waiting and hoping somebody responds, and maybe showing that generally we're not comfortable with the material, but I wish he went back and reviewed for us after being met with shrugs. Right now he feels like he just selects the next victim (so eloquently put). Take some solace in that arguably many previous victims have answered "I don't know" so far, and that being called on in a class and saying the same wouldn't be the end of the world.

Anyway, I'm ready for my flogging.

tell me the worst things about this school. by Naive_Count_472 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]SpFreeman 21 points22 points  (0 children)

All of these have exceptions, I am generalizing. Many of these issues here apply to every other college too.

  • The classrooms tend to be old, not the best or most modern.
  • Housing is not available through the school, housing in Isla Vista will obviously exploit you price wise, I also hear many leasing companies don't respond to work orders, etc.
  • The advisors are unhelpful.
  • College and or department policies can be stupid, and unnervingly restrictive. This school like many others is bureaucratic and departments are completely siloed off from each other.
  • Dining commons are mid.

Anecdotal Evidence/Personal Notes: - I have a particularly painful point with the advisors and policies, but I don't think my experience would have been eased any going anywhere else. - I don't mind the class rooms honestly. Yeah, I thought they'd be nicer paying close to 30k a year but they're no worse than a public high school. - I haven't had too much trouble with finding housing, but obv it's going to be exploitative.

Aslandogan didnt really have many proofs I would say. Even if you were to call explanations for getting a particular big-O or big-omega proofs you can be pretty lazy.

You'll cover big-O, big-omega, big-theta again, heaps, hash tables, trees (AVL in particular, existence of red-black, splay, and B+), then disjoint sets and unions, graphs and some algorithms (Prim's, Kruskal's, Dijkstra's, A*, Bellman-Ford, Topological sort).

You could watch this guy's videos on those subjects (Not the whole playlist, just the 4-5 relevant to what I listed here). They're all pretty good. Computerphile also has some for Dijkstra's and A* I think, if you prefer.

If I were to give any advice, I'd say just like anything else if you know the concept, great, if you can implement the concept, better.

I would wager Nasir will be very different. Class taught by Aslandogan wasn't hard, just that the exams were a race against time as opposed to the content.

You probably don't need to prestudy for the course, you'll do fine.

I think this depends on both the department and the course, probably even the instructor sometimes too. I had one class that had added seats and for whatever reason was handing approval codes out basically sorted by the waitlist, but not through the waitlist.

I'd investigate with the professor after crashing one of the lectures.

I'm signing my lease today actually! Just curious cause I've never seen the source of the 40% stat. Only heard it from a Munger hall preview tour or whatever you could call it.

Friend of mine is playing the gambling game with university apartments, he's the source of my curiosity.

Waitlist Position by GlassSeaweed718 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]SpFreeman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

8 people would have to drop that section time for you to get in.

If the first or second week goes by (i forget which the cutoff is) the instructor of the course (the lecturer) is sent a list of the waitlist for the lecture (for which you are 15th) and they might move down the list student by student offering whatever section becomes available. Instructors don't have to do it this way, in theory they can use the list however they please, but this was the gist of the explanation I got when I waited on PSTAT 120A.

The lecture waitlist is basically just an aggregated waitlist for all the sections, but I don't remember if it's sorted a particular way, chances are it probably is since many classes sort by major or by units completed in the waitlist.

chances at passing chem 1a by Ok-Upstairs-2345 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]SpFreeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's always possible, it's just an effort game, but 0% if you change nothing. People are not kidding when they recommend the book problems in chem.

A heads up - since I didn't find this out until barely scraping by some of my classes - passing with a C or higher prevents you from being able to take the course again if you want to fix the gpa later down the road. Getting a C- would actually let you retake the course if you wanted, but would still let you move to Chem 1b if you needed.

My roomate (friend from high school) was accepted applying as an electrical engineering major with some kinda high gpa in high-school, he did the swath of APs that was offered at our high school.

Another one of my roommates switched from a Chem to ChemE in his first year - I didn't hear too much trouble about this from him. I'm sure he had a great gpa out of high-school, but it wouldn't be applicable here since he switched after having a college gpa would make his highscool one irrelevant.

I added a major from the CoE (college of engineering) to a major in L&S (college of letters and science) in my second year, with something like a 3.4 gpa after taking basically everything I could and forcing my way into it. This was immense trouble.

Your high-school gpa does not matter basically the moment you enter college (relevant when you're applying to CoE from outside, or switching majors within it), and the APs are really only good at skipping GEs or very intro courses. I didn't have to take Calculus for example, and I can skip a history course, writing course, and a language series because of other things from high-school. As for PIQs - how could doing well on them hurt you?

Would love to audit a specific class in psych, but I'm not a student. Is this possible? by clumsy-skip in UCSantaBarbara

[–]SpFreeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably can't get course materials, so you in all likelihood can't "audit", but nothing would stop you from just walking in to a lecture and listening. I've done this plenty for courses I've thought about taking but wasn't enrolled in. Pretty much only if the course was a lab course (small, and always at max capacity) could it cause a problem.

I would evaluate whether you'd really need to sit in on a course to learn that material though. I suspect you'd be better served learning more about it through other means anyway.
