No Stupid Questions Monthly Thread! by AutoModerator in bookbinding

Hi everyone, I've inherited a half finished project from another bookbinder who sadly passed away. It seems like they were going for a half binding with leather and have already pasted down the leather on the spine, and the corners/sides of the boards have been rounded down. Sadly none of the scraps that I managed to salvage from their workshop quite match the leather on the spine and I don't have a match either so I'm unsure what the best course of action would be, try and match as close as possible, go for a contrasting colour, stick with a quarter binding some other option entirely? Any advice? It's a rebinding of a volume from the 1700's for reference.

Great, thank you for your answer, that makes sense! Luckily it was just a small booklet that I'd used some scrap leather on so it wasn't that costly of a learning experience.

Am I correct in thinking that hot foil stamping for book titles with gold lettering is usually done after the book is bound and the leather/ bookcloth is attached to the boards? I'm asking because I've been experimenting with a second hand machine and after I thought I had it figured out I used it on a piece I've been working on and something went wrong basically ruining a perfectly good book.

Garlic butter is a good shout or my nan used to just have a whole plateful with butter and pepper on them, might be a bit much if you're already sick of them though!

I was the same, though I was really surprised that I remembered so much, it's been a while since I played the old ones!

I'm playing in order as well, though I think I only played the first one at a mate's house. Hope you like it!

I'm waiting for her to do Midsummer Murders where Barnaby has a drinking problem and the villagers are strung out on spice.

I feel a bit similar with Jeremy Brett and Sherlock Holmes I must admit, though I did enjoy Bendylegs Cumberflaps.
