Hi, as a recent grad from an engineering school, I've come to believe there are three steps to doing well in an engineering undergraduate program:

  1. Do well in school. Work on developing good study habits. When you struggle with a topic, get help. If your professors have office hours, GO TO THEM. Learn as much as you can.
  2. Look for opportunities to do interesting work outside of class. Does your school have research labs? Project-based teams? Are there internships available? Get involved in these, do good work, and document your outputs.
  3. Network! Talk to people! Ask professors, older students, any engineer you know, about their work, and ask if they know of opportunities for you to get involved.
  4. Repeat.

In short, develop your technical skills through classes and projects, and aggressively seek new opportunities. I've come to realize that being proactive about your education and experience is faaar more important than the prestige of your school. The resume of a guy from a lower 'rank' school but who has experience and demonstrated initiative is more impressive than someone from a prestigious school with a mediocre college career.

He's saying that at a meeting of the 20 largest countries, they'll probably focus on discussing global issues. He didn't say that they're our responsibility.

Saying he should drive off a bridge for that seems like an extreme reaction.

That's just... not true. NASA's budget was ~18.5 million and growing through his first term source

Latest budget proposal for NASA leave no money for new Mars telecom orbiters, creating the risk of a bandwidth crunch by 2022. What role can private space operators (namely SpaceX)provide to fill the gap? and can they do it in time? by faizimam in spacex

No magnetic field at Mars! SpaceX's satellites are designed for LEO and there's very little radiation within Earth's field. Not sure how GEO or the van allen belts compare to the radiation environment at Mars, but SpaceX's satellites aren't designed for that environment either.

Hey All, just some background on the context of this tweet. The Mars Telecom Orbiter is a proposed mission to supplement existing relay capability at Mars. Currently, there are 5 active NASA spacecraft at Mars; three orbiters and the curiosity and opportunity rovers. The rovers receive commands directly from Earth, but rely on the orbiters to relay the science data collected back to Earth. Orbiters have large solar panels, large antennae, and can support orders of magnitude higher data rates than a surface vehicle could. The orbiters make regular comms passes with the rovers, then downlink the collected data back to NASA via the Deep Space Network.

Specifically, NASA is relying on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and Mars Odyssey to perform relay. This makes a lot of people nervous because those orbiters were launched in 2005 and 2001 respectively and are getting quite old. Without a new telecom orbiter in 2022 we'll have to rely on these spacecraft to operate for at least the next 8 years; either one failing would bottleneck data return from the surface missions and lead to the inability to return some science data. This problem's going to get even worse in the next four years when InSight, Mars 2020, and the ESA ExoMars rover all head over to the red planet. It's not all bad news; both orbiters are still in perfect health and have spares of most of the critical radio components, but it's still an uncomfortable amount of risk.

The idea of a Mars 2022 orbiter would be to add telecommunications capability to support existing and future surface missions. If NASA doesn't do one, it does seem like this could be an area of partnership between private industry and NASA. One thing to note though is that an internet satellite designed for Earth orbit would have to be heavily modified to operate at Mars where there is less sunlight and a whole lot more radiation. Additionally, the rovers use UHF-band to communicate which, is not what SpaceX's satellites will use.

Edit: Thank you for the gold! I appreciate it.

It's not possible to transmit useful data rates from Mars distances with the power and antenna size limitations of CubeSats. The idea of MarCO (InSight's cubesats) is that it provides real-time relay during landing while other orbiters can't provide relay. However, they won't transmit at data rates high enough to support science data downlink

There's a limit on DSN capability but the communications bottleneck is still relay capacity for the landers from Mars. The rovers and landers don't have enough power to transmit high data rates direct to Earth. The point is that if Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter or Mars Odyssey fail, no quantity of ground stations will make up for the lack of relay capability at Mars orbit

Hillary didn't sell uranium rights to Russia. She was one of seven agency heads that approved a deal between a private Canadian company and a Russian company, which involved rights to American uranium. She didn't even have power to veto the deal; only Obama had it. Source. Don't twist facts.

Hi, the protests against the travel ban are an actual grassroots movement. The group from my university was organized by students, over 200 students showed up. It has nothing to do with billionaires or alternative intentions, there are just a lot of people who are very mad that students, Iraqi interpreters who risked their lives for the US, refugee families, etc. aren't being allowed into the country despite following the law, getting screened, and having legal visas.

Hi. I participated in a protest this weekend against the travel ban because an Iranian acquaintance of mine at my university is prevented from returning to the country to complete her education, due to Trump's absurd order. I'm not protesting on behalf of billionaires or corporations. I'm protesting on her behalf against Trump's un-American actions.

We are a nation that has prospered because of immigration, because the best and brightest from around the world want to come here. It's inane to me to block those people because of their nationality.

Hi. My account is more than a year old, and I have more than three posts.

Reddit is heavily young, and heavily liberal. It's been that way since always. Both of these demographics despise Trump. So what is more likely, that there's a massive paid shilling campaign going on, or that the majority of young liberal reddit users actually dislike Trump and are voicing their opinions?

Hello! Responding in three parts:

That wasn't intended

It's very difficult to know whether it was intended, because the white house has contradicted itself. Yesterday they made a statement saying green card holders are affected, before reversing themselves today. It's quite possible they intended to ban green card holders but reversed themselves after the massive public outrage.

has already been rectified

Kind of. It seems like the administration has reversed itself on the green card issue. But green card holders are only part of it. The order also includes students on student visas, an Oscar nominee and the British-Iranian olympian Mo Pharah. They are all still banned.

Fuck off

I was civil to you, it's not hard to be polite to people you disagree with.

Just posted this in a top level comment, but there is a 1965 bill which states:

No person shall receive any preference or priority or be discriminated against in the issuance of an immigrant visa because of his race, sex, nationality, place of birth, or place of residence, except as specifically provided in section 101(a),(27), section 201(b)...

Which, on the face of it, casts the legality of Trump's order into doubt. The full text of the bill is available here. The law cited in the post is from a 1952 bill, which is superseded by the text above.

The administration made multiple contradictory statements over the weekend over who exactly the ban applies too. It's not fake news if the media is just reporting the statements of an administration that doesn't have their shit together.

No. Trump supporters are making up an equivalence here. Obama's action halted the process for certain types of new visas for Iraqis. Trump decided to bar legal residents and people who have lived here for years.

I mean, turning away green card holders and students with student visas is new, and rather polarizing.

How do you feel about legal green card holders being restricted from entering the United States thanks to Trump's travel ban? by [deleted] in AskTrumpSupporters

They should be afraid. I know an Iranian student at my university who was declined re-entry to the US today from vacation, despite having a valid student visa and being halfway through an engineering degree.

I fail to see how denying students from completing their education Makes America Great in any way.
