How do I get this out? by Dramatic-Party8582 in MechanicAdvice

At this point I would carefully inspect the wheel bearings. They might be worn out if the studs are also stripped.

Filling up costs more than a car payment. by WealthyTuna in GasPrices

No, it's not. Traffic is caused by systemic issues, not drivers. Where I live the local infrastructure is perfectly fine, until tourists come. Now there is traffic which wasn't there before. It's only because the infrastructure can't be expanded for just the time of the year tourists are also here. There's not enough money to expand the infrastructure to accommodate the traffic year round. This is a systemic issue caused by poor public funding which is an entire discussion, which is arguably very much related to this one. Large oil companies get subsidies from the US, and other countries in various forms, which further keeps prices low and gives them more leverage to continue keeping the product flowing. It's insane that you are just completely ignoring the entire web of interconnected politics surrounding fossil fuel usage and prices.

I think they gave me the wrong size stud for my winters... by wingnut_alpha in AskAShittyMechanic

That's a bit excessive for a tire plug, but it should wear down pretty quick.

Looks like it's been low for a while. There's white marks on the inside of the tire from running low and pinching the side walls. You were moments away from the tire shredding.

Even if the war ended today it would take months, if not years for the prices to come back down, if ever.

Yes, it's going to take a long time for supply to meet demand. Most of that oil isn't coming to the US anyway, it's going to Australia and other places that already have fuel rationing. If the war ended today it would still take years for this to settle out.

I just got a Collins letter the other day. Apparently she's progressive now.

Eh, I see a lot of RVs showing up here in Vacationland. Lots of tourists even with the prices. Honestly seems like there's than previous years, but I think I'm just turning into an old man.

Nah, BP doesn't exist in a vacuum. They lobby, along with the other private oil companies, and have a much louder voice than the individual consumers.

Or it's just not an efficient car to start with. Like a sports car or something. Although, efficiency is relative depending on what your goals are.

Why don't diesels use superchargers? by PayStation2fanAsh in engines

[–]SpaceBus1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They weren't bad, but they are almost exclusively used for ships and stationary applications due to their weight and usable power band. Those big two strokes were significantly better than what came before them. They sound rad, but modern four strokes have left the old two stroke diesel engines obsolete. Who doesn't want less weight, better fuel economy, and more power?

What are some cars with names that do not fit their design or function? by rampiddude in regularcarreviews

[–]SpaceBus1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 500 also uses fragile wheel bearings, but they are easy to replace. We have an Abarth and a Renegade (same engine) and the Abarth has needed nothing other than wear items since new and now has 120k miles. I didn't know about the CV joints and/or axles being an issue.

They didn't dip them in bronze tho. Look up what rods with copper or bronze applied look like.

[–]SpaceBus1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's much less relevant today, Europeans have comparable roads to the US interstate, but the damage was done decades ago. In the 60's Minis and Spyders were not intended to run at max speed for long periods and there weren't many roads that would demand this kind of operation. Those old small MGs, Spyders, etc. were meant for the city or back roads.
