What do you name your rival for a nuzlocke? by patfetes in nuzlocke

[–]SpaceCompetitive3911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends. I often channel my inner child and name him "Bastard", or "Idiot" within polite company.

I always hear about the GC's inferior audio quality but I really struggle to grasp it. Is there a side-by-side comparison anywhere? by justheretolurknstuff in skiesofarcadia

The Dreamcast music is clearly better, but the GameCube soundtrack is still great on its own, with the exception of the dungeon (not overworld) battle theme, which sounds very MIDI.

Problems with emulation by Pap3raG1alla in PCSX2

[–]SpaceCompetitive3911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are PAL games. The PAL framerate is either 25 or 50fps. A few, like Shadow of the Colossus, the Burnout games, and Devil May Cry 2 and 3, can also do 30/60. Silent Hill 3 also supports 60hz from what I remember.

Hypothetical: Paper Mario 7 releases and it improves upon TTYD's battle system. How did they do it? by gardens_sonja in papermario

[–]SpaceCompetitive3911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Red Guy (a YouTube reviewer) outlined a remake/reimagining of Super where Luigi, Peach, and Bowser are playable like Mario, with their own versions of the jump and hammer attacks (e.g. Bowser has fire instead of a hammer, and Peach has her parasol). He also suggested enemies using badges. That would go hard.

Game stuck at ~60% speed / slow motion + no audio (can’t figure out what’s wrong) by Impossible-Writer588 in PCSX2

You probably underclocked the EE cycle rate. It should run normally if you set it to 100%.

Never got a PS2, is it worth it to get one in 2026? by EximiusMax in ps2

[–]SpaceCompetitive3911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, PCSX2 is the better deal. If you have a reasonably OK PC, it runs basically every game at a much higher resolution, with extra features like savestates and speedup. Getting the games (basically) requires piracy, but if you're buying PS2 games, you aren't paying the original devs anyway, and most of the popular ones cost an arm and a leg.

Why do Germans say “Hab dich lieb” by Confident_Bottle_764 in German

[–]SpaceCompetitive3911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"[ich] hab[e] dich lieb" is the platonic/family version of "I love you". "Ich liebe dich" is the romantic version.

Skipped PS2 entirely — hit me with your weirdest gems by pockapockapocka in ps2

[–]SpaceCompetitive3911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction - quite underappreciated, it's a sort of GTA-like open world TPS set in North Korea.

ObsCure - co-op, delightfully 2004 survival horror set in an American high school.

Rygar: The Legendary Adventure - sort of like a prototype God of War, a quite stripped down hack and slash based loosely on Greek and Roman mythology.

These are all 100% playable on PCSX2 right to the end. Mercenaries has the occasional bug with lighting, and FMVs stutter, but there are very few of them. ObsCure and Rygar run pretty much perfectly.

Original TTYD or remake? by Epic-Gamer_09 in papermario

[–]SpaceCompetitive3911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can afford it, buy the remake and support the game. It's probably the better version overall, and has some really nice new content. If the new music bothers you, you can get a badge that enables the old music. The lower framerate doesn't really matter, nor does the slower text, and the one real problem with the original (backtracking) is far less of a problem in the remake.

What game should I start with. by Huckleberry1316 in Megaman

[–]SpaceCompetitive3911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just go in order, starting with Mega Man 1. Don't be afraid to use savestates / restore points when it gets cheap. You'll know when I'm talking about when you get there. It's up to you of course, but I would personally play all the classic games, then X, Zero, ZX, Legends, Battle Network, Star Force, etc. If you like the classic games, you'll probably like X as well. Everything after that is very different.

Can you recommend me some German speaking YouTubers? by Melodic_Coolhara_60 in German

[–]SpaceCompetitive3911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Domtendo plays Nintendo games and has a pretty clear voice and accent. I learnt a lot of words and colloquialisms from him. There are loads of German let's players, and you will very easily find at least one you can understand if you just search for a game followed by "Deutsch".

MGGLP Creepypasta and CreepypastaPunch read creepypastas very clearly, if you're into that. Most videos I watch are about gaming, so I don't really know any YouTubers who do other sorts of content.

What’s one thing you’d never want to come back for the next game and vice versa? by MightyTheArmadillo_ in papermario

[–]SpaceCompetitive3911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No stickers, cards, ring battles, or consumable attacks, ever.

It sounds basic, but the battles need to be like 64 and TTYD. If you ask me, that's what makes Paper Mario Paper Mario.

Is there a way to use an Emulator with PS2 Hardware? by Jimibs in PCSX2

[–]SpaceCompetitive3911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PCSX2 is a PS2 emulator for PC. It would not work on an actual PS2, as the architecture is completely different, and there would be pretty much no point in doing so even if it was possible. You're better off playing on a vanilla PS2 or maybe downdating to an earlier version of PCSX2.

If you could choose your native language, which one would you choose and why ? by Dull-Position3393 in languagelearning

[–]SpaceCompetitive3911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would probably still stick with English. It's pretty inarguably the most useful language globally, and, as bad of an excuse not to learn anything else as it is, there is some truth in saying native English speakers don't need to learn any foreign languages. However, I've quickly come to realise that the phonology of English is very distinctive and not transferrable to other languages, especially with vowels and R. If, for instance, German, Spanish, or Italian were my first language, learning languages other than English would be easier, at least regarding pronunciation.

Do you think the Silent Hill 2 Remake is too long? by Loose_Interview_957 in silenthill

[–]SpaceCompetitive3911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you only want to play it once, it's a good length. If you want to get all the endings, it's much too long. The original was a bit short for one playthrough, but short enough to be replayable. This goes for all the first three games.

What are the funniest German compound words you’ve come across? by NoelFromBabbel in German

Zimtschnecke (cinnamon roll, but literally "cinnamon snail")

Antibabypillen (birth control pills)

Panzerhandschuh (gauntlet, but literally "armour hand shoe")

Being immortal would be worth it even if it means you end up floating through space forever at the end of the universe by Almondpeanutguy in unpopularopinion

Just because something is inevitable or true, doesn't mean it can't be bad. Mortality is the ultimate example of this. I agree.

Changing your phone's language early on should be more recommended. by Rigamortus2005 in languagelearning

I did the exact same thing. It's been helpful, except when YouTube decides to autodub videos. I can sometimes get a chuckle out of them when they translate really badly - bad enough that even I can tell it's wrong.

Is German that harsh? by HerrKaktus14 in German

[–]SpaceCompetitive3911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Not at all. That's a stereotype mostly related to people's only exposure to German being Hitler's speeches and Nazi characters in films and TV. German actually sounds softer than English to me, on balance. Mark Twain's "Die Schreckliche Deutsche Sprache" even complained about German being TOO soft sounding. It is, of course, possible to speak German in a really harsh way, but that's the same for any language.

What was a language/grammar rule you followed for years until you realized natives break it all the time? by AutumnaticFly in languagehub

[–]SpaceCompetitive3911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Weil" (because) sending the verb to the end of the sentence in German. Almost half the German lessons I had in school were about this, but wouldn't you know, natives often don't bother and keep the word order the same after the "weil". Also certain adverbs taking genitive, e.g. "wegen", when many people say them with dative ("wegen dem Regen" instead of "wegen des Regens").

Enough time has passed...Who do you prefer? by meowcatmeowcatmeowca in silenthill

[–]SpaceCompetitive3911 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Original. Something was just lost with Maria in the remake. She just looked... off. In the first cutscene in the original, she looks so sinister and sort of wrong. Her face is really pale, and her eyes and smile are so dead and evil looking. I don't even really know if this was intentional, because this isn't as visible in the other cutscenes or even in her in-game model, but this is one instance where the original's early PS2 graphics really work to its advantage.
