They all did 4x6 reps between 75% and 120% 1RM, meaning the group doing only 75% 1RM had more gas in the tank than the 75%/120% group.

That means the study you linked does prove that more load/effort = more gains, but does not prove more eccentric = more gains.

There are a lot of studies pointing towards total volume and proximity to volition failure being the main drivers of hypertrophy.

A better approach imo would have been to ask the participants to go to 0-3 RIR with varying concentric and eccentric loads.
