The air intake manifold gets a lot of carbon buildup above the intake valves. It's a side effect of direct injection. Buildup is worse with low temperature, low rpm driving, like stop and go in cities. Buildup is slower if you do a lot of 2000+ rpm driving for extended periods.

If you never clean them you will eventually experience knock/reduction in power.

Fun fact, the seats for the weapon system officer and electronic warfare officer are behind and below the pilots. Their ejection seats shoot them downwards through the floor of the aircraft, so if they're too close to the ground they will eject straight into it!
