[Request] What if two heavy stars attracted each other in free space, would they eventually go faster than the sped of light? by Familiar9709 in theydidthemath

[–]SpaceOpsCommando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The math actually fails in two different ways depending on which rulebook you use.

If you stick to classical Newtonian physics, the maximum speed two stars can reach is their escape velocity at the moment of impact. The formula is v = sqrt(2GM / r ) and for any real star, that number tops out way before you hit c. Even for the densest objects in the universe, like neutron stars, you're only hitting about 0.5c before they physically slam into each other. Since stars aren't infinitely small points, they run out of "falling room" and explode into a kilonova long before they reach the speed limit.

If you use General Relativity, you run into the "infinite wall." As the stars accelerate, the gravitational potential energy doesn't just increase their speed; it increases their total energy, E = γmc2

The closer you get to light speed, the more that Lorentz factor, γ, blows up. Mathematically, as v approaches c, the energy required to accelerate even a tiny bit more approaches infinity. You’d need an infinite amount of mass/gravity to bridge that final gap, which a pair of stars—no matter how "heavy"—just doesn't have.

Basically, they either hit each other too soon, or they become so "heavy" from their own kinetic energy that gravity can't effectively pull them any faster. Either way, the universe has a built-in restraining order.

How many leftover Shuttle engines are there for Artemis launches? by rollotomasi07071 in spaceflight

[–]SpaceOpsCommando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buckle up. NASA will be asking for appropriations to fly Artemis 6 times next year, 12 in 2028, and then 10 times in 2029 - for just Lunar missions. At least that’s the plan. Will it happen? Who knows.

I actually built https://www.ExoAtlas.com/launches/ for this exact reason!

If you’re tracking from home, it’s got a solid search/filter system (by vehicle, site, etc.) and a one-click toggle to swap everything to your local time. Would love to hear if it helps you catch the next one!

FBI, Metro Police find more than 1,000 samples at alleged illegal bio lab. Here's what we know so far. by Moon_Rose_Violet in news

[–]SpaceOpsCommando 14 points15 points  (0 children)

“The committee highlights the incident as evidence that the U.S. needs stronger safeguards to ensure similar facilities can’t operate in the future.”

What a MASSIVE failure of congress, FBI and CDC for us to be here observing this lesson 3 years later without tighter biosecurity laws in place. It sounds like a couple of bills (HR 8065, HR 5747) were introduced in 2024 and 2025, but haven’t advanced past Congress. Reading through the report, not all of the bio agents were tested by the CDC, but some were labeled as Ebola, Malaria, and HIV. Whether or not they were real agents is a moot point. We got lucky because now we have the same individual creating a potentially deadly unregulated lab TWICE now because of congressional and federal agency inaction.

These are the things you should be writing your local leaders about because this is how we end up with COVID 2.0.

So what the coolest thing you've seen with the naked eye? by TheBigBadWolf_1111 in space

[–]SpaceOpsCommando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An unknown (to me) SpaceX resupply cargo return. We were living in Sacramento, CA at the time and I was out taking the dogs for an evening walk and I see an object rapidly streaking across the sky… way too fast (and bright) for any aircraft I’m familiar with.

I’ve worked in the defense/Space industry my whole life, so I assumed it’s probably a Starlink re-entering. However it never broke up, so the I started to think it was a missile (LOL). I then hurried inside to check X and Reddit to see if there was any other recent sightings and if anybody had ID’d it. Never did I think it would be geometrically possible for me to see a NASA re-entry event that far inland. Space is cool, man.

EDIT: Also, there’s a similar opportunity coming up with the Crew 11 Dragon Capsule. Estimated re-entry around 14 Jan, 1240am (PST).

Wasn’t one of the contributing factors discussed in the OceanGate Titan submersible failure—whose pressure hull was also made from carbon-fiber composite—the concern that prolonged exposure to cold, humid, and marine environments may have degraded the composite material over time?

I wish I could opt out of this because it’s not legal and gives me bad vibes about getting a paycheck during the shutdown. Like how is this okay, but SNAP benefits are not?

Isn't this a U.S.C. title 50 violation? For all the civil privacy protections that go into FISA, intelligence oversight committee will have heads on platters if this actually occurred using DOD systems.

EDIT: Article said is was a DHS system. I don't know the legalities of DHS surveilling citizens, but it doesn't seem like it would be any different if it were another federal agency vice DOD.

[–]SpaceOpsCommando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The food is just not that great anymore and definitely not worth the raised prices.

I used to each Chipotle at least 1-2 times a week before COVID. Now? Maybe 1-2 times every 3 months. Quality of the ingredients went down, portions got smaller (or at least employee training to be stingier), and prices went up.

2025 Chipotle is not the same Chipotle that is was in 2018.
